AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF UNIVERSITY WOMEN ANNUAL BOOK SALE 2017

John O’Neill of BLACK GATE loves to flaunt his incredible acquisitions from eBay and other sources. Check out John’s scores here and some BLACK GATE goodies here. I decided to do an imitation of John’s book presentations displaying the books I bought at the American Association of University Women’s Annual Book Sale this week. How do you think I did?

The annual AAUW sale here is pretty lame. Never find more than 2 or 3 books I want. They rarely have mort than a dozen SF/F books for sale and have these are those LeHaye rapture books. A lot of your haul is pretty good altho I would do without Perry Rhodan , David Weber, EE Smith or the Lin Carter novels(his anthologies okay).

Steve, I picked up the Perry Rhodans to donate to SUNY at Buffalo. The Librarians there would like to assemble a complete Perry Rhodan collection.

        George, congratulations!
I just hope your house is more stable than the book store described here – it just could barely be saved from falling down under the weight of all the books, crazy story from England: http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-derbyshire-39744581

Perry Rhodan – that brings memories of the 60s again when this German SF series was all the rage – I found it too simplistic, but it went on and on, more than 1000 weekly installments!

A good haul–THE PUPPIES OF TERRA being my favorite (of the ones I’ve read). A few weeks back our local Friends of the Library had a romance novel sale: a bag of books for a dollar! Who could resist? Not I! I was cramming a grocery bag full of new and old favorites. These kids today will never know the thrill of finding a long-sought title without recource to eBay!

Deb, you enjoy the “Thrill of the Hunt” as much as I do! THE PUPPIES OF TERRA is an upgrade to the beat-up copy I had.

For a moment I wondered – what’s that, thenI looked at my “data base”:
THE PUPPIES OF TERRA = MANKIND UNDER THE LEASH (BASED ON:WHITE FANG GOES DINGO)
I knew that I knew that story!

        Totally OT:
I think we talked about Greg Allamn’s death – now look here who was at his funeral in Macon (a nice city btw):
        http://www.rollingstone.com/music/news/gregg-allman-laid-to-rest-at-macon-funeral-w485721
“Former president Jimmy Carter, Peter Frampton, ex-wife Cher and many of Allman’s bandmates like Jaimoe, Dickey Betts and Derek Trucks were among those that attended the private ceremony at Snow’s Memorial Chapel in Macon.”

And even more OT – but related to another topic:
The band of Derek Trucks and his wife Susan Tedeschi is one of our favourites.

Jeff, Diane took the book photos with her iPhone. She supports the AAUW Book Sale. My problem is where do I put the new books. I’m running out of space!

Nice haul, but I didn’t notice any mysteries. We don’t have an AAUW sale here, and no longer have a Brandeis sale. Most of our libraries just have carts of books for sale. The biggest sale here was always the Coronado library sale, held in conjunction with the flower show in the park across from the library.

I haven’t gone to the Cor. sale in years, but in it’s heyday, I would get there around 9am for the 2pm opening. That’s where I found a first of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. I found many good books there in the past. They have a better book section which is horrendously over priced. They had a book club of Hunt for Red October for $100 in the better sect, and a friend bought the true first for $5 in the general fiction section. The line of people would go about 1/2 way around the block, with people coming from LA. You had to join the friends to get into the preview day, and I hear now that there is hardly a line, though still a lot of books. The Navy from the Coronado base helps them deliver and set up for the sale

Six dozen books…a good haul, George. I’ve read a lot of these and would happily read all the others (including the Perry Rhodans!).

Jerry, Peter Rhodans were plentiful in thrift stories and used bookstores just a few years ago. Now, they’ve vanished.

So is there also an American Association of University Men Annual Book Sale, or is this (another) women-only gig?

Some nice things, here, George, I’d say I’ve seen nearly all, read about half, currently own maybe 8 or 10 (maybe less).

Rick, I haven’t heard of an American Association of University Men. The AAUW Annual Book Sale has been going on for over a decade. I’ve found some great books there over the years for a pittance. As I was going through this batch, I found that DARKER THAN YOU THINK was signed by Jack Williamson! What a nice surprise!

What amazes me is how clean these covers are! In our libraries they tape so much crap over the covers you’re lucky if you can see the title or author’s name!

My old pal Bob Juanillo had an illo in one of the Perry Rodan books circa 1971! Yep, Juanillo did one illo!

Bob, most of the books I bought were in good condition. I suspect someone donated their SF collection to AAUW for the Book Sale.

Steve, no westerns. They seem to be an extinct genre around here. I picked up some mysteries, but nothing special. Not really worth a photo.
