Nocturne (Apple TV+)

I’m not a fan of serial killer stories, but Nocturne lured me into watching the first episode chiefly because Liev Schreiber stars as a former homicide detective relocates to a small Pennsylvania town, which comes under attack by an imprisoned serial killer.

The series is based on “Joona Linna” novels Lazarus and The Sandman by husband-and-wife team Alexander Ahndoril and Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril who use the pen name Lars Kepler.

I’ve only watched the first episode of a 10 episode series that will conclude in December. But the excellent cast, including Zazie Beetz as Saga Bauer, an undercover FBI agent and Jonah’s surrogate daughter, and Poorna Jagannathan as Alexandra Quinn, an FBI special agent in charge, are compelling.

Of course, Stephen Graham as Jurek Walter, a serial killer imprisoned in the basement of Riverside Psychiatric Hospital, will give you chills with his haunting performance. GRADE: Incomplete, but trending towards a B+
