It’s been a long time since a cable series captured the spirit of another era. MAD MEN gets the Sixties right. And now Masters of Sex does the same thing for its time period. This drama about the Masters & Johnson sex research that led to the ground-breaking Human Sexual Response. Michael Sheen and Lizzy Caplan are wonderful as the lead characters, Dr. William Masters and Virginia Johnson, the two pioneering researchers of human sexuality. I had low expectations for this series, but the writing and acting are strong. I’ll proclaim Masters of Sex my surprise series of 2013. If you haven’t seen it, check it out.
Love this show. They are perfectly matched, aren’t they. And they manage to impart information and yet entertain.
Patti, MASTERS OF SEX is my favorite “new show” of 2013.
I wasn’t aware of it’s existence. Not that I’d watch, since I’m not much of a TV watcher other then sports, but it’s interesting to know what’s out there.
Rick, MASTERS OF SEX is smart and entertaining. Worth a look!
We find that some of these period pieces based in that era just don’t appeal to us that much and this was one. I may give it one more try.
Jeff, I found MASTERS OF SEX getting better and better with each episode.
Well, I tend to trust Lizzy Caplan’s instincts. We are rewarded here with seeing more of Caplan than usually, in at least two senses. Some of the series is a bit pat, but generally it’s been very entertaining, more charming than I expected, and with mostly believable characters and dialog…Sunday has been the best night of television this fall into winter, with THE GOOD WIFE, MASTERS OF SEX and COMEDY BANG BANG running (usually) from 9-11:30p ET.
