Daniel Day-Lewis, Nicole Kidman, Marion Cotillard, Penélope Cruz, Kate Hudson, Sophia Loren, and Fergie. With all that star power, how could you make a bad movie? Well, Rob Marshall, the director of Nine, did. Nine sucks. It’s a musical, but the music sucks, too. Not a memorable song in the film. The story is adapted from Fellini’s 8 1/2 where a director with writer’s block is trying to make a movie. He smokes a lot, has sex a lot, imagines what his film might be like which kicks off the big musical numbers (which suck), and generally obsesses over his hypochondria. The actors bravely try to breathe some life into this corpse, but it was dead on arrival. Nine opened and closed here in two weeks. It seems like Hollywood doesn’t know how to make musicals or westerns any more. GRADE: F
FORGOTTEN MUSIC #1: GOFFIN & KING: A Gerry Goffin and Carole King Song Collection 1961-1967

Remember when people used to listen to song lyrics? And the lyrics were clever and made sense? Gerry Goffin and Carole King wrote over a hundred hits during the 1960s: songs like “Locomotion” by Little Eva and “Will You Love Me Tomorrow?” by the Shirelles. This collection brings together a nice mix of Goffin and King’s familiar and not-so familiar songs. This is great music just dripping with memories!

SHERLOCK HOLMES

Robert Downey, Jr. won a Golden Globe for his performance of Sherlock Holmes. That won’t mollify the purists who think Basil Rathbone and Jeremy Brett are the only actors who could play the role. Downey, with the aid of Jude Law as the able
Dr. Watson, take on a criminal conspiracy that dabbles in Black Magic and revolution. My only quibble is that the fetching Rachel McAdams doesn’t get enough screen time for my taste. Turning Sherlock Holmes into an action movie does have some downside: the action has to be explained in a data-dump delivered by Downey at the movie’s conclusion. But despite these quibbles, I enjoyed Sherlock Holmes and you probably would, too. GRADE: B
THE GODWULF MANUSCRIPT By Robert B. Parker
“The office of the university president looked like the front parlor of a successful Victorian whorehouse.” That’s the first line of Robert B. Parker’s The Godwulf Manuscript, the first of many Parker novels I read. I believe The Godwulf Manuscript, God Save the Child, and Mortal Stakes rank with the best work Hammett and Chandler wrote. Like you, I was stunned by the news that Robert B. Parker died so suddenly. It’s a sad day.
CRASH COURSE: THE AMERICAN AUTOMOBILE INDUSTRY’S ROAD FROM GLORY TO DISASTER By Paul Ingrassia
Hubris. Paul Ingrassia uses that word several times in his meticulous historical analysis of “what went wrong” with the U. S. automotive industry. But, Ingrassia doesn’t stop there. He includes all the mistakes the Japanese made in the American auto market, too. There’s plenty of blame to spread around from General Motors betting the price of gas would stay at $1.00 a gallon so SUVs would stay a viable (and profitable) product line–they lost that bet Big Time–to the United Auto Workers negotiating the infamous Job Bank that paid laid-off workers almost all of their salary to do Nothing (at a cost of $400 million). Colossal blunders, greed, excess, abuse of power, and denial of Reality round out Ingrassia’s fascinating story. I highly recommend Crash Course. GRADE: A
HAPPY MARTIN LUTHER KING DAY

I thought I would honor MLK Day by featuring Jay-Z’s love song to New York City:

[Jay-Z]
Yeah
Yeah I’m out that Brooklyn.
Now I’m down in Tribeca.
Right next to DeNiro
But I’ll be hood forever
I’m the new Sinatra
And since I made it here
I can make it anywhere
(Yeah they love me everywhere)
I used to cop in Harlem
All of my Dominicanos (Hey yo)
Right there off of Broadway
Brought me back to that McDonalds
Took it to my stash spot
560 State Street
Catch me in the kitchen like Simmons whipping Pastry
Cruising down 8th street
Off-white Lexus
Driving so slow
(but BK, it’s from Texas!!)
Me I’m out that BedStuy
Home of that boy Biggie
now I live on Billboard
and I brought my boys with me
Say what up to Ta-ta
Still sipping Mai Tais
Sitting courtside
Knicks and Nets give me high-5
N**ga, I be Spiked out
I could trip a referee
…tell by my attitude that I’m MOST DEFINITELY FROM…

24: SEASON EIGHT BEGINS
Jack Bauer is back on FOX tonight to protect us from terrorist plots and corrupt Government officials. Season Seven of 24 was a bit of a yawner so I’m hoping Season Eight features plenty of explosions and gun-play. The best part of 24 is following Dave Barry’s real-time commentary on each episode. I log on to Dave Barry’s blog before each airing of an episode of 24 and laugh at Dave Barry’s analysis of 24’s mayhem. If you haven’t watched the previous seven seasons of 24 don’t worry. You’ll get up to speed quickly as soon as the bullets start flying. The plotting isn’t that deep.
DVORAK: PIANO CONCERTO IN G MINOR, OP. 33 By Vassily Primkov
It was news to me that Antonin Dvorak had written a piano concerto. I’m familiar with Dvorak’s other music, with the New World Symphony, the Slavonic Dances, the “American” String Quartet, and the Cello Concerto in B minor being my favorites. When I read a very positive review in the American Record Guide of Vassily Primakov’s new CD with his performance of Dvorak’s piano concerto, I immediately ordered it. While not as compelling as his other work, Dvorak wrote a very entertaining piece of music when he penned his piano concerto. Vassily Primakov’s performance is sparkling and full of energy. Along with the piano concerto, Dvorak’s Poetic Tone-Pictures, Op. 85 fills out the disk. This is pleasant music superbly played. GRADE: A-
FORGOTTEN BOOKS #50: THE SHIP OF ISHTAR By A. Merritt
Rick Robinson and Drongo urged me to review A. Merritt’s classic The Ship of Ishtar so here it goes. I read this book back in the 1960s. Now with Planet Stories’ new edition being published, it was great to reread this mind-bending fantasy. The first fact you need to know is that The Ship of Ishtar was first published in 1924. Literary fashions change over 86 years. In The Ship of Ishtar the reader needs to adjust to florid descriptions like “His eyes dwelt upon her sweetly amorous, scarlet mouth, the tiny chalice for kisses at her throat.” (p. 62) The glamorous redhead on the book’s cover is Sharane, the avatar of Ishtar (Mother of the Gods and Men). Opposing her on the Ship of Ishtar is the evil Klaneth, avatar of Nergal (God of Death). Into this fantastic brew lands John Kenton, an archeologist recovering from injuries sustained during World War I. Kenton’s adventures aboard the Ship and his frequent journeys back to his mansion in 1924 make for a choppy narrative. But stay with the story for the dramatic rescue in the Temple of the Seven Zones. If you enjoy High Adventure in the mode of Edgar Rice Burroughs, Otis Adelbert Kline, Clark Ashton Smith, and Robert E. Howard then you’ll enjoy The Ship of Ishtar. Eric Mona and the staff at Planet Stories have put together a great package: the most complete edition of this novel in 60 years including Virgil Finlay’s legendary erotic artwork. This book should be in your personal library.
HESPIRA By Matthew Hughes

There aren’t too many books that will cause me to drop everything and read them, but Matthew Hughes’ Hespira is one of them. Matthew Hughes is the writer who writes Jack Vance pastiches. If you love Jack Vance’s work as much as I do, Matthew Hughes’ books will delight you with their Vancean wit and cleverness. Hespira features Henghis Hapthorn (patterned on Vance’s puzzle solver, Magnus Ridolph) Old Earth’s foremost discriminator (private detective). Hapthorn helps a woman whose memories have been stolen from her. The search takes them off-planet and into a cunning conspiracy. I’ve enjoyed the two previous Henghis Hapthorn novels, Majestrum and The Spiral Labyrinth. Don’t miss this wonderful books! GRADE: A
