Baen Books has just published their third omnibus volume of A. Bertram Chandler’s John Grimes series, Galactic Courier. This volume collects four Grimes novels: Star Courier, To Keep the Ship, Matilda’s Stepchildren, and Star Loot. Grimes has become a privateer and travels the Rim Worlds to find business. And most of what he finds is unusual and dangerous. If you’re a fan of adventure, you might consider reading these entertaining SF novels. They have plenty of Sense of Wonder and fun!
I liked the first volume of these – they were as much fun as you said. I was less enthralled with STAR COURIER but it was still OK and I will continue to read the series.
There are highs and lows in a long series like the John Grimes Saga, Jeff. The next volume, RIDE THE STAR WINDS (out in April 2012), contains some of my favorite Grimes novels.
Chandler claimed that he used the I CHING to plot STAR LOOT.
I like that the spacesuits on the cover aren’t unisex.
Philip K. Dick used the I CHING to write his books, too, Drongo. The artwork on these omnibus volumes is eye-catching.
You read this already? It was just published a few days ago! I got mine Tuesday, and it was a pre-order. I just don’t know how you do it, George. I haven’t even started the first volume, though it has moved to the “read next” stack of three books on the nightstand.
I don’t watch a lot of TV, Rick. Seriously, I’m glad A GALACTIC COURIER brings those Grimes adventures back into print.
OK, I’m new to this series (thanks to Richard Robinson), and just finished Vol. I. You say Vol. IV is coming next year. Will that be the end, or are there still more stories and novels to collect?
Six omnibus volumes were part of the original plan, Evan.
I understand the young Grimes stories tended to be the weakest…I see the inevitable path of the conversation in that cover above including the alien noting, “Your fly is open…”
Ha! Todd, your mind works in strange ways! Actually, that’s not a fly, it’s a bee. A really, really big bee.
