I’ve seen the trailers for The Bridge for the past few months. Now, our local Buffalo News TV critic weighed in with a rave review. I’m sure there will be others. Like The Killing, The Bridge is a dark drama involving a murder. The bridge referred to in the title is the Bridge of the Americas that serves as a border crossing between El Paso and Juárez, Mexico. A corpse shows up in the exact middle of of the bridge making the case both American and Mexican. Like The Killing with obsessive Detective Sarah Linden, The Bridge features Diane Kruger as Detective Sonya Cross, a member of the El Paso police department who suffers from Asperger Syndrome. I’m looking forward to this new series which begins tonight on FX at 10 P.M. EDT. Check for the time in your area.
Asperger’s Syndrome seems to be the latest condition du jour. As the mother of a person with A.S. (now medically referred to as high-functioning autism spectrum disorder), I can’t say I like this trend toward using the condition for entertainment value.
Deb, I agree with you. A few years ago, we had plenty of characters with Tourette syndrome. Now it’s Asperger’s. Anything to make the character “quirky.”
Me, too. But I have given up on THE KILLING. Just too sluggish. I almost think last season and the first were better. And I am with Deb. It is everywhere.
Patti, I’m still hanging in on THE KILLING. But you’re right that the pacing has become glacial again. Every season of the THE KILLING around Episode Six the series hits a wall.
What Deb said. You’d think Asperger’s was as common as sleeve tattoos and skinny jeans if you listened to Hollywood.
Like George, we’ve been seeing the previews for this one for months – when they started they were just an incomprehensible few seconds – and we’ll definitely be watching it.
I really think the networks could learn from FX, TNT, A&E, USA and AMC. Put on 6-13 episodes of a show people will want to watch. If it works bring it back for another series. The British have been doing this successfully for decades. 22 episode seasons are – for the most part – too long.
Jeff, you’re right about the 6-13 episode format. We’re watching UNDER THE DOME and I can’t imagine a movie version. How would you cram 1000 pages into 2 hours?
It certainly does nothing to dispel the “it’s always raining in Seattle” theory. And Jackie wants to know why it’s always night.
This season is 12 hours rather than 13, with the first two and last two (each) on one night.
I like to listen to The Bridge on Sirius/XM radio. Great old songs. As for this one, nah, don’t need”dark” don’t need quirky people with medical conditions to siphon sympathy or cheers or whoever that aspect is inserted. I didn’t know it was always night under the dome. Maybe it’s easier to film? Maybe the dome is made of Photo-Grey glass?

George, you’re aware that the original versions of THE BRIDGE and THE KILLING are from the same folks who are doing BORGEN, right?
Todd, I just finished watching BORGEN 2. Excellent drama! I can’t wait for BORGEN 3. The Swedes and the Danes seem to be doing the best TV crime dramas right now. I’m enjoying both THE KILLING and THE BRIDGE.
