The Venture Bros.: The Fifth Season is an animated series that appeared last year on the Cartoon Network’s “Adult Swim.” These episodes continue the fun and frolic and action of the previous seasons. The Venture Bros. series is a pastiche of the old Johnny Quest adventures. Imagine that Johnny Quest grew up to be super-scientist Dr. Thaddeus Venture. His teenage sons, Hank and Dean, resemble the Hardy Boys. The series makes fun (in an affectionate way) of Johnny Quest and other action-adventure series. The cover on this Blu-ray box looks like the artwork that used to be on Grosset & Dunlap’s Tom Swift books. I love the giant pterodactyl on the Venture jet! If you’re in the mood for some animated action blended with some humor, check out The Venture Bros. GRADE: A
I feel liked I am missing a lot by not watching any of this sort of show. I need to at least try ARCHER!
Patti, ARCHER works the same vein of parody as The Venture Bros. Your public library may have these DVDs.
Is Hadji there, or Scamp (was that the Quest’s dog’s name?). Ha. I’d rather just watch the original Quest shows on video.
Rick, there are parodies of all the JOHNNY QUEST characters. The original JOHNNY QUEST videos are available on DVD.
Let’s get things right here, gang. It’s Jonny Quest without an “H”. The dog was Bandit. Scamp was the offspring of Disney’s Lady & Tramp, and had a backup strip in some DIsney comics. I never saw this show, or anything else on Adult Swim, but kudos to whoever conceived and painted the cover – a spot-on spoof.
Art, thanks for those clarifications! You would love all the inside humor of THE VENTURE BROS. And I love that spot-on spoof cover, too!
Great post, George! I remember Jonny Quest though I’d forgotten all about his adventures. This pastiche looks right up my alley, more so as I still watch cartoons on cable, the current flavour being “Iron Man: Armored Adventures” (The Animated Series). That Blu-ray cover is quite something.
