FORGOTTEN BOOKS #264: UPON THE SEA OF STARS By A. Bertram Chandler

A. Bertram Chandler’s Upon a Sea of Stars is the 5th Volume of his John Grimes saga. Grimes is a space captain whose adventures on the rim of space take him into some bizarre situations. This omnibus volume includes Into the Alternate Universe, Contraband from Otherspace, The Rim Gods, and The Commander at Sea. This is Old School science fiction with fast-paced action with some humor thrown in. I loved these adventures when I first read them decades ago. I’m happy Baen Books has reprinted them in such an attractive and affordable package for a new audience. You don’t have to read the previous four omnibus collections to enjoy these stories. But, you’ll want to.

As a bonus this week, I’m including a set of fun vintage book covers celebrating librarians. Just click here for some chuckles!

By profession, Chandler was a sea captain and the influence of the sea is evident in much of his work. Lovers of Horatio Hornblower and fans of William Hope Hodgson should find a lot to like in Chandler’s books. (Chandler was also a nudist but I won’t speculate how much that influenced his work.)

And thanks for showing me that all librarians are hot and sexy!

Jerry, I started reading A. Bertram Chandler back in the 1950s. I enjoy his nautical flavor, too. Yes, librarians are hot. Glad you enjoyed those covers as much as I did!

I have been wanting to pick up the Baen Chandler collections simply because they sound like the kind of fun space operaish adventure stories I grew up reading and still love today.

Great link to the library covers. My wife works at a university library, so I’ll be forwarding that on to her.

Why didn’t I ever meet a librarian like that?

I have three or four of the Baen Grimes collections and have read a couple. I agree they’re fun.

Jeff, I never saw those librarians when I attended SUNY at Buffalo’s School of Information & Library Studies back in the 1970s. The BAEN BOOKS omnibuses are fun and affordable. Hope you’re enjoying yourself in Arizona!
