I read Lawrence Block’s A Walk Among the Tombstones when it was published back in the early Nineties. It’s the 10th book in the Matthew Scudder series. Scudder is a former cop who is a recovering alcoholic. He’s a private investigator who does “favors” for people who reward him with “gifts.” Scudder is asked to investigate the murder of a woman and discovers a series of similar murders. Liam Neeson plays an effective Scudder. A Walk Among the Tombstones is one of the creepiest books Lawrence Block ever wrote and the movie captures that creepiness very effectively. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Liam Neeson in another Matthew Scudder movie. GRADE: B
I have the book, but not yet rea it. will do so before seeing the movie.
Randy, in general I like the early Matt Scudder books better than the later ones. But, A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES is very compelling.
I might have to break my vow not to enter a theater. Might, I said.
Bob, A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES wold be worth it.
I want to see this one, but I’ll probably wait for the video release.
Bill, movies are showing up on DVD and Blu-ray faster and faster.
They certainly do seem to be doing the darkest books into movies lately, don’t they? I might have to see it for the Brooklyn connection.
Jeff, you’ll recognize many of the sites where the action occurs in this movie.
Dark, “gritty”, creepy, horror, grim are the order of the day, it seems. Not for me. Plus the Scudder book I read (2nd in series, I think) I didn’t like at all, and I don’t much care for the personality of the author, so no Block, no Scudder, no dark gritty grim stuff. This isn’t for me on many levels.
Rick, the movie version of A WALK AMONG THE TOMBSTONES captures the darkness and creepiness of the Lawrence Block novel. But, if you don’t like the Matthew Scudder books, you won’t like the movie. You might like Lawrence Block’s lighter fare in the BURGLAR series.
