I liked Edge of Tomorrow despite not being a Tom Cruise fan. Haven’t seen everything yet-such as Selma, Foxcatcher or Inherent Vice.
My favorites would be, not in any order.
Birdman
Whiplash
Nightcrawler
The Drop
Grand Budapest Hotel
Gone Girl
Steve, I like your list. The performances in GONE GIRL are Oscar-worthy. Loved THE GRAND-BUDAPEST HOTEL, but I saw it in 2013 . AMERICAN SNIPER will probably be the next movie I see.
Are you sure you saw Grand Budapest Hotel in 2013? It’s eligible for Oscars this year, which means it had to have been released in 2014 (I think). Anyway, whenever it was released, it’s my favorite movie of the year.
Nice list, George. I might be interested in Chef, myself, which I assume is comedy? We sometimes have watched that food truck show on HGTV and it was fun. Now that the annual Christmas movie watching is over for us, we have several things (Netflix) coming up: Midsomer Murders, Inside Job, American Hustle and a rematch of Driving Miss Daisy. Plus about a 120 other things in the queue…
I guess it’s just me but I was underwhelmed by GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL. I liked it but I didn’t love it. Are we talking 2014 movies or movies we saw in 2014?
Dallas Buyers Club (I know, a 2013 movie)
American Hustle (ditto)
20 Feet From Stardom
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Guardians of the Galaxy
Chef

I’ve seen only EDGE OF TOMORROW, which I liked a lot.

Bill, I really liked EDGE OF TOMORROW. IT was my favorite Summer Movie of 2014.
George, I haven’t seen either of these films and will single them out for next year.
Prashant, all but THE IMITATION GAME are available on DVD and Blu-ray.

Deb, I think we went to a “Sneak Preview” for THE GRAND BUDAPEST HOTEL.

Rick, CHEF has some funny moments but it can be quite serious. It’s a small film with a big heart.

Jeff, nice list! I feel the same about GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY as you do about THE GRAND-BUDAPEST HOTEL: liked it but didn’t love it.
I will post my list next week. Lots to love in 2014 for me. EDGE and GUARDIANS would make my second ten.
Patti, I can’t wait to see your list! I’m guessing BOYHOOD is on it.
The Smirking Dwarf, ptooey!
