Viv Albertine was a guitarist for the punk rock group, The Slits. This new memoir starts out with a lot of fun and snarky writing but as Albertine tells her stories about her life with Mick Jones, Sid Vicious, the Sex Pistols and the Clash and other 1980s British punk rock artists the book becomes darker. Viv Albertine’s abortion, her struggles with drugs, her marital problems, and her health problems make Clothes Clothes Clothes music Music Music Boys Boys Boys a long journey into sadness. A cautionary tale… GRADE: B+
Never heard of her. Don’t care.
Ditto. Give me a book about the 50s or 60s or maybe 70s.
Bob, I’m always interested in women who were punk rockers.
Jeff, the British punk scene in the late 1970s and early 1980s had plenty of energy.
I’ve read a few autobiographies of rockers and their lives all seem to have a heavy downside. The scene is just too conducive to the kind of bad things you mention, and at a young age must be siren-like to them. What a shame music and rough life go together like this, though it’s not true for classical musicians.
Rick, you’re right about the downward arc of rock celebrities.
You never fail to impress me with your openness to everything.
Patti, I’m curious about a lot of things.
You sound more smitten than curious. May I recommend the movie The Blue Angel, professor?
Bob, love THE BLUE ANGEL! And anything with Marlene Dietrich!
