I enjoyed the first couple dozen books in The Destroyer series written by Warren Murphy and Richard Sapir back in the 1970s. The quirky humor and wild action was refreshing in the Men’s Action genre. After a while, the formula started to get stale and I stopped reading about Remo Williams and Chiun. I kept picking up copies of books in The Destroyer series whenever I came across them cheap (like a quarter). Now, I’m about to donate another couple thousand books to SUNY at Buffalo so I figured I’d read a volume in The Destroyer series for Old Time’s Sake. I picked Dream Thing because it featured an Elder God (right out of H. P. Lovecraft) about to wreck havoc on Earth. It was not as much fun as it sounds. Remo and Chiun are supermen without kryptonite. Very little humor or suspense. Skip this one. GRADE: D
Like you I read a bunch of these back in the 70s, and the last in 1982. I liked their quirky humor. But I have no motivation to revisit the series now. I read a lot of Murphy’s solo work too, including the Digger and Devlin Tracy books, and the Razoni & Jackson buddy cops books – perhaps the template for the Lethal Weapon movies (I know Murphy was involved).
Jeff, THE DESTROYER series was part of an action genre that has completely disappeared. Like you, I enjoyed those early books. THE DESTROYER series lasted for decades, but now it’s gone.
I am betting this is your first D.
Patti, I usually don’t want to waste blog viewer’s time with material in the “D” and “F” range (I try to spare you from that) but this time I needed to vent.
This is a series, like the Mack Bolan books, that I never read.
Rick, the early books in THE DESTORYER series were fun romps. The later books…not so much.
Be advised that Warren probably didn’t write this.
Bob, Warren Murphy set the parameters for these books, but this volume was a stinker.
Damn! I see the actual author’s name was listed! Never mind!
Bob, Warren Murphy would have written a much better adventure than Tim Somheil did.
