I bought this copy of Romeo & Juliet for $4.99 at BJ’s Warehouse (AMAZON has it for $5). A Blu-ray for under $5 is a bargain and this movie is one of my favorites. I’m not a Leonardo DiCaprio fan, but he’s very good in this film. I am a huge Claire Danes fan and she’s terrific as Juliet. Director Baz Luhrmann’s films are always a little wacky. The contemporary setting for Romeo & Juliet was an audacious risk, but he pulls it off. I loved this movie when it first came out in 1996. It’s even better on Blu-ray at this incredible price! GRADE: A
A pretty good flick; actually one of the better versions.
You ever see the one with Laurence Harvey?
Dan, I haven’t seen the one with Laurence Harvey but my Library has a copy. I’ll order it and watch it.
As a rule I dislike Baz Luhrmann’s films. In fact, I find most of them unwatchable. This is an exception, however, as it was pretty good. As you said, Danes is excellent as always.
Jeff, I’m with you on Baz Luhrmann. But he scored big with ROMEO & JULIET. Claire Danes shines in this film.
I liked this one a lot too. The setting was great.
Patti, you’re right about the setting. The risk paid off.
For me, it only came alive during the interaction between Danes and Sorvino.
Is yours a Spanish-language dvd package w/the original English soundtrack as an option?
Todd, I completely agree with your insight on Danes and Sorvino. I couldn’t find an adequate graphic online for the Blu-ray edition I have so I just went with this one. I do have a Spanish option.
Ya coulda scanned it, George. I don’t remember if I saw this on the small screen, but if I did it wasn’t memorable, I guess. That’s sure a great price.
Rick, I figured I could find an image of the ROMEO & JULIET Blu-ray online. But, I was wrong. My scanner at work is on the fritz.
I enjoy Baz’s films. Moulin Rouge is my favorite, but Romeo and Juliet is a close second. I love his aesthetic, and this was the first of his films that I saw. Actually saw it on the big screen when it was first released. It is one I do need to pick up on blu ray.
Carl, I first saw ROMEO & JULIET on the Big Screen, too. But the Blu-ray is great…and inexpensive.
It is one I need to pick up. I need to rewatch Strictly Ballroom one of these days. It was quirky, but I liked it.
Carl, you can find ROMEO AND JULIET in Blu-ray for less than $5. Check TARGET or go online.
