I missed this Guy Ritchie movie back in 2000 but now it’s on Blu-ray and well worth a look. Brad Pitt plays a gypsy boxer. He leads boxing promoter Jason Statham into trouble with a gangster played by Alan Ford. In addition to the boxing plot, Benicio del Toro pulls off a jewel heist and has an 84-carat diamond with him. And, of course, everyone wants the diamond: ex-KGB Boris (Rade Šerbedžija), American gangster “Avi” (Dennis Farina), bounty hunter Bullet-Tooth Tony (Vinnie Jones), and a trio of black toughs. If you’re a fan of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels you’ll enjoy this equally wacky crime film. GRADE: B+
I have ended seeing most fo Ritchie’s films, one way or another (well, not SWEPT AWAY, one has to have some standards) – I’m not really an enthusiasts, though LOCK STOCK remain to me the freshest. I’ll probably end up seeing his UNCLE film, though it does seem to have ignored most of what made the original TV show popular unfortunately …
Sergio, I’m with you on Guy Ritchie’s THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. It has none of the “look-and-feel” of the original.
I can’t believe it’s been 15 years since this one came out.
Bill, you just have to look at Brad Pitt in SNATCH to realize a big chunk of Time has passed.
I know I saw it and like it, but there is little resonance. I guess that’s the kind of movie it is.
Patti, I found SNATCH very quirky with more odd-ball characters than any movie I can recall.
Not a Guy Ritchie fan. I hated his SHERLOCK HOLMES so much I couldn’t get past half an hour, despite the cast, and I won’t be seeing MAN FROM UNCLE either.
Jeff, I’m on the bubble with THE MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. I might wait until it shows up on cable before I try watching it.
