Carol is based on a Patricia Highsmith novel, The Price of Salt. Cate Blanchett plays a wealthy mother whose marriage is failing. She goes to a department store to buy a Christmas gift and finds an attraction to a cute clerk played by Rooney Mara. Cete Blanchett’s husband files for divorce and Cate decides to take a holiday car trip. She invites Rooney Mara. Plenty of smoldering glances in this movie! The plot is predictable. No surprises, just good acting. GRADE: B+
Reading the book, which is different and not. It looked great, didn’t it? Think they missed out on some parts of the book that would have made the film better. Instead they went with what made the film look better.
Patti, you’re right about the look of the movie. Great period clothes (even that politically incorrect mink coat Cate wore) and scenic shots.
Meh. No great hurry for me, though I’ll probably get around to it eventually.
Jeff, CAROL is another “quiet” movie like BROOKLYN. Good acting and, as Patti points out, a great looking film.
It will be a netflix or hbo for me. Those are both good actresses.
Maggie, I’m sure CAROL will appear on Netflix fairly soon.
Maybe a bit OT:
That movie poster is in German …
Wolf, I thought you might pick up on the German version of the movie poster. We try present an international perspective here.
George, the movie has just got a lot of nominations for the British BAFTA awards – congratulations!

Wolf, Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara both deserve award consideration for their performances in CAROL.
