THE FILM MUSIC OF RALPH VAUGHAN WILLIAMS, VOLUMES 1-3

A few weeks ago, Rick Robinson recommended, as part of his SATURDAY SOUNDTRACKS feature, The Film Music of Ralph Vaughan Williams, VOLUME ONE on his excellent blog, http://brokenbullhorn.wordpress.com/. I found that Chandos offered a box set of Williams’ film music in their 3 for 2 series so I bought all three volumes for the price of two (almost a Bargain of the Week!). Volume One features Scott of the Antarctic, Coastal Command Suite, and The People’s Land. Volume 2 contains 49th Parallel, The Dim Little Island, and The England of Elizabeth. Volume 3 has some of Williams’ most atmospheric music with The Story of a Flemish Farm, The Loves of Joanna Godden, and Bitter Springs. Great music, plenty of hours of delight! GRADE:A

  1. That’s great! I’m glad you’re enjoying the music, George. I may still post one of the other volumes later along in Saturday Soundtracks. Today is one for Veteran’s Day. This set is a bargain and, as you say, hours of great music.

Not everyone even knew Ralph Vaughan Williams wrote film music – many think of him only as a classical composer.

  2. And thanks for the nice compliment. :-)

You do a great job with your blog, Rick.

I’ve purchased every soundtrack you’ve recommended, Rick, and I’ve been pleased by all the ones I’ve listened to.

  5. That’s wonderful. I can’t promise every soundtrack I do will be top drawer, I may occasionally do one that’s a critical review, not a recommendation, but so far I’m doing film music that I believe is worth buying and listening to.

I wonder what your reaction is (if you’ve got it) to GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING?

I love GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING, but it’s currently residing in my wife’s Altima, Rick. She plays it constantly (along with GLEE, VOL. 1).

I feel like I’m eavesdropping here.

  8. Say, Patti, nice of you to drop in….

  9. george says:

    The more the merrier, Patti.
