FORGOTTEN BOOKS #356: THE YELLOW CLAW and THE GOLDEN SCORPION By Sax Rohmer

THE YELLOW CLAW2THE YELLOW CLAW
THE GOLDEN SCORPION
Back in the Sixties, I read Sax Rohmer novels as fast as Pyramid Books would publish them. I was fascinated by the Fu Manchu series, but I also enjoyed Rohmer’s Gaston Max mysteries, The Yellow Claw and The Golden Scorpion. Plenty of action and suspense power these adventures. William Patrick Maynard’s informative Introduction puts Rohmer and these two novels in perspective. Stark House should be applauded for bringing these two spooky novels back into print in such a nice package!

I remember reading Sax Rohmer many years ago but the books were too much “formula” for me, I preferred crazier ideas.

Anyway I think I should look in my library, in a corner somewhere all that stuff should still exist – Rohmer, carter Brown, Mickey Spillane etc …

Dan, I shared those thrills on the hunt for Fu Manchu. Of course, I was a teen-age kid when I first read them. It didn’t take much to thrill me back then!

I liked those old Pyramid reprints too. In England I looked for the more obscure titles. The books were often read to death and falling apart. I only read the first Full Manchu book. I preferred the other stuff.

I applaud Stark House for these reprints.

Jeff, STARK HOUSE presents these Sax Rohmer novels in a very nice format. I hope the sell a bunch of these books. And publish more of Sax Rohmer’s more obscure work.

Every once in a while I read a Rohmer book just for fun. The last one I read (just a couple of months ago) happened to be THE GOLDEN SCORPION. I’m sure I’ll read a couple more before the year is out.

I’ve not read Rohmer, at least not that I recall, but remember those covers. Maybe if I ever get caught up on reading. sigh

Maggie, the Rohmer covers on the old Pyramid editions were great! But I prefer the larger print and format of the STARK HOUSE versions now.

Rick, I haven’t read THE YELLOW CLAW since the Sixties. That’s when I read all the Sax Rohmer titles Pyramid Books published. But now that I have this STARK HOUSE edition, i’LL dive right in!

Love me some Sax Rohmer. Just picked up 6 Fu Manchu hardcovers the other day for $5 each. And I got the beautiful Brood of the Witch Queen from centipede Press. I will probab ly do a Rohmer book as a Forgotten title sometime this year. Not sure which and not sure when.

Scott, nice score on those hardcover Sax Rohmers! I have a few but they’re scarce today. I’ll wait eagerly for your future FFB featuring a Sax Rhomer classic!
