DIRTY DANCING: THE MUSICAL

dirty-dancing-2
This musical version of the 1987 film starring Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey generates high energy and almost constant dancing. There’s plenty of Sixties music (the movie and the play are set in 1963) for the cast to dance to. This story of a young girl finding love at a Summer resort still has the power to engage. If Dirty Dancing shows up in your neighborhood, I recommend you see it. GRADE: B+

Glad you enjoyed it. We never did see it when it played here, but Jackie is a huge fan of the movie.

I really liked their use of the real music of the 1960’s.

Jeff, the Sixties music really makes DIRTY DANCING: THE MUSICAL. And, the dancing of course. The story is pretty thin.

Thanks. Don’t think we’ve had it here. I watch the movie fairly often when it’s on. My friend Nancy is going to NYC for a wedding the end of the month. She asked me what she should see on broadway, and laughed when I suggested Hamilton (I know it’s sold out, but you can get tickets from ticket brokers, guessing $400 or so. I’m guessing it will be on tour in 2-3 years, though). I also suggested the Gloria Estefan musical, Waitress and fully committed with Jesse Tyler Ferguson. She went with fully committed, with maybe a weekend matinee of On Your Feet. I’m Jealous!!!

Hi, Maggie. Sara Bareilles wrote the music for WAITRESS. Diane and Katie have tickets to see WAITRESS on Broadway at the end of May. No way I would pay $400 to see HAMILTON. I’ll wait until it comes to Toronto and see it then.

There’s a lot more music on your list than I remember from the show. The movie is fun; I’m sure I’d like the musical.

I’m VERY envious of Diane and Katie’s Waitress tickets. I’ve been enjoying Sara Bareilles CD of the music and am looking forward to the cast recording.

I suspect Hamilton will run away with most of the Tonys but I hope Waitress garners a few/

Beth, Diane and Katie are having a Mother-Daughter Bonding Trip. They are seeing a musical per day for a week! Yes, the play version of DIRTY DANCING has many more songs than the movie version.

The Steve Martin/Edie Brickell musical premiered at the Old Globe We enjoyed it. Not sure it can compete with Hamilton (can anything?) He’s got another one that will start here.

I wonder if Hamilton is that good, or if the hype has pushed it to the top. I’ve seen 2 numbers, or parts of them, and it seemed kinda so-so.

I liked Dirty Dancing movie a lot, ought to watch it again.

Rick, I haven’t seen HAMILTON yet, but I have the book it’s based on in my BIG FAT BOOK stack. The Dirty Dancing movie was a surprise hit back in the Eighties. The secret is its great music and dancing!

I have to confess that I’m not a fan of musicals – but I really like Edie Brickell!

And I have fond memories of passing through the Smokey Mountains on our way from Nasville to the coast – especially the Folk Museum near Asheville with those wonderful quilts. My wife’s sister is a quilter and we sent her pictures …

Though the people of that region, especially North Carolina even today seem a bit strange to us liberal Europeans!

Wolf, the Presidential campaign here is a complete zoo! Liberals and conservatives, socialists and evangelicals, polarization everywhere!
