BARGAIN OF THE WEEK: THE COMPLETELY MAD DON MARTIN: 1956-1988

Daedalus Books once again is offering an irresistible deal: The Completely Mad Don Martin 2-volume set for a rock-bottom price of $29.98. This set lists for $150. AMAZON wants $109 for it. It doesn’t get much better than this! I read MAD MAGAZINE as a kid and loved Don Martin’s distinctive work. Martin was inducted into the Comic Book Hall of Fame in 2008, a well-deserved honor. I loved Don Martin too, George, though I doubt I’ll be getting this one.

In fact, MAD helped shape (or should I say ‘warp’?) my formative years. I still remember many of the things I read there 40-odd years ago, sometimes more clearly than where I left my keys!

MAD had similar effects on me, Jeff. Some of the MAD collections contain material that hasn’t aged well, but much of it is still humorous.

Gazooks! This IS a great deal. Volume is incredibly funny, packed with far more than $30 worth of laughs. Volume 2 is only half-brilliant, because by then MAD was often assigning other writers to come up with Martin’s gags. His illustrations are consistently crazy, but the other writers could not match his level of inspired insanity. Still, this set is a must have!

I read Mad Magazine as a youth too – when I could. It was frowned on in my home, but I read the copies of friends. Martin was good. I do remember a few things from those magazines, but since I saw only a few of them my recollections are limited.

I wish someone would put this price on the complete Dilbert that came out no too long ago.

I’ll keep my eyes peeled for a discounted COMPLETE DILBERT collection, Rick. But for now, this incredibly priced Don Martin is the best I can provide.

I love the Daedalus catalog–all those great hardback books and esoteric artists on CD. Whenever I have some unexpected cash burning a hole in my pocket, Daedalus is one of the first places I look.

Pity about Don Martin’s falling out with the MAD folks (post-Gaines? I forget)…CRACKED’s gain, the Gaines-baby’s loss. The Fantagraphics collection of the complete HUMBUG! (the second Harvey Kurtzman magazine after MAD and the aborted two-issue TRUMP, and before HELP!) certainly entices, as well.
