It’s been nine years since Matt Damon performed as “Jason Bourne” so I wondered if age might weigh on the character. Actually, age weighs on CIA Director and Bad Guy: Tommy Lee Jones. Director Paul Greengrass loves close-ups of Tommy Lee Jones with all of his wrinkles, creases, bumps, and blotches. Jones is 69 but looks like he’s 100 in this movie! Jason Bourne has been off the grid for nearly a decade, hiding out in remote European countries. A former CIA operative, played by Julia Stiles, contacts Bourne and tells him that a secret program to monitor all of American communications is about to go into online. With the uproar over the hacking of the Democrats National Committee and the release of the files by Wikieaks, the plot captures the tenor of our times. My favorite character in Jason Bourne is Vincent Cassel who plays a stone-cold killer called “The Asset.” He hates Bourne and his need for vengeance powers much of the concluding scenes of this film. And, I really liked Alica Vikander who plays Tommy Lee Jones’s “Number Two” as a dangerous and talented woman with her own cunning agenda. All in all, this is a fine crafted spy movie. If you’re in the mood for astonishing car chases, riots, and suspense then you’ll enjoy this latest episode in the Jason Bourne Saga. GRADE: B+
I’ve seen and enjoyed all the Bourne movies, but they are netflix for me.
Tommy Lee Jones is aging naturally, I’m guessing. I didn’t notice that much difference in the trailers from the movie from last time I saw him, but as I skim thru commercials, I don’t catch a lot.
the aging actor that totally shocked me was Alan Rosenberg. He played Cybill Shepard’s second husband, Ira, on Cybill. He was just on Suits, and had totally white hair and a deeply wrinkled face. I went on IMDB and the picture there had him with dark hair and a face that is getting wrinkled. Not sure when the IMDB photo was taken, but I’m guessing some years ago.
Maggie, Paul Greengrass loves close-up shots. The ones with Matt Damon shows a determined, intelligent face. The ones with Tommy Lee Jones shows an experienced Machiavellian schemer…with a lot of wrinkles!
He’s been looking bad for years. I hear there is a lot of the usual jumpy camerawork. We’ll see it, but might wait for TV too. Next up for the theater is the Star Trek movie.
Jeff, you’ll enjoy STAR TREK: BEYOND but JASON BOURNE is a better movie.
“The usual jumpy camerawork” turns me off. Thanks for the warning.
It’s been 2 days (since Thursday afternoon) and I still miss my cat a whole lot. Probably will for a while. Sorry to mention it, but it helps to share.
Rick, there has been a lot of Bad News lately. Things need to start looking up!
Its directed by Paul Greenglass who is known for jumpy camerawork. He also directed Bourne 2 & 3.
Jeff- I liked Jason Bourne(B-) better than Star Trek(C-).
Steve, like you I prefer JASON BOURNE to STAR TREK: BEYOND.
George, I haven’t paid much attention to the Bourne trilogy although I did read and enjoy Robert Ludlum’s novels. I still have to read Eric Van Lustbader’s Bourne novels, though. Matt Damon is a fine actor and worth going to the theatre for. I read somewhere that he has only 25 dialogues in this movie.
Prashant, JASON BOURNE is an action movie. Matt Damon doesn’t say a lot, but he DOES a lot!
I’m still pondering where the “remote European countries” are! Andorra?
Bob, the opening scene is on the remote Greece-Albanian border where Jason Bourne is fighting for money.
George – I was looking forward to JASON BOURNE, but found the movie disappointing. I think Damon-Greengrass & Co. have gone to that well one too many times.
Elgin, you’re right. JASON BOURNE did not met the standard of THE BOURNE SUPREMACY or THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM. I’m guessing the lure of money might have affected Damon and Greengrass’s decisions.
