We still have school today, so I’m up at my usual time. I was so disconnected from the date, I actually had “Go by Post Office–get stamps” on my to-do list for today.
I actually think this holiday should come to an end since it celebrates the brutality of Europeans against indigenous peoples. I know Bob would disagree but still…
How does it do that? It celebrates his landing in the western hemisphere, that’s all. It doesn’t “celebrate brutality”. Can’t agree on that one, Patti.
But, in researching, those opposed to it are saying it celebrates the arrival of Europeans in North America, and then those Europeans’ ancestors mistreated and killed a lot of native Americans, which is true. Seems to me it was the Spanish who did the worst, in Mexico and south America, but that’s neither here nor there. Thinking on it, I’m not sure why we would celebrate an Italian landing in the Caribbean anyway…

With the holiday and with the recent passing of Oscar Brand, I’m finding myself singing “That Navigatin’, Calculatin’ Sonovagun Columbo” from one of his Bawdy Songs albums. If I keep this up, I may not go out in public today.
Jeff, what better way to celebrate Columbus Day than with a redhead! I plan to hit some used bookstores today and a flea market. Ohio has always yielded some good books!
I’m thrilled for you, but clearly the disparity between public school teachers like Diane and me rears it’s ugly head again. We worked full time while you college professors really work part time.
Jackie, when Diane’s fellow teachers used to complain about the College schedule, I used to say, “Go get your Ph.D. and you can have a work schedule like mine.”

yippee! you’ll wonder how you ever did what you did while working once you retire
Rick, that annuity should allow you to buy a LOT more books!
Cap'n Bob
The importance of Columbus Day is that it proved to Europe that there was a land between them and India and it was full of wealth untold. Sure, whites killed Indian. Indians also killed Indians, and Indians killed whites. History is replete with one people killing another. That doesn’t diminish the bravery of the Columbus expedition and its far-reaching significance.
Whenever I hear someone complain about us stealing land from the Indians I always say give yours back. So far no one has.
Thanks for not calling it Indigenous Peoples Day!
Bob, we’re actually near Columbus, Ohio today visiting Diane’s nephew’s family.

Deb, some schools have Columbus Day off, others don’t. I actually get Election Day off!
NYC schools still get Columbus Day off, I believe. They will also be off on Wednesday for Yom Kippur.
Jeff, same here.

Patti, Columbus Day is becoming a phantom holiday.

Enjoy your Italian heritage today, George!
Jerry, I plan on eating some spaghetti today!
Nice redhead!

When I was working we got Columbus day off, but in negotiations, traded it for the day after thanksgiving. I liked that a lot better.
Maggie, we get Columbus Day, Election Day, Veterans’ Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Black Friday off. I only have 16 more days to work!

Maggie, I just want to read more books in Retirement.
Same thing happened when I was working for the County.
Jackie always liked the Fall term better than the Spring, partly because it is a lot shorter, yet there are a lot more days off.
Retiring at the end of the year rather than in June is a win win.
Speaking of the end of the year, I turned 70.5 this year, so I have to start taking my annuity by the end of December.
Rick, that annuity should allow you to buy a LOT more books!

Bob, I celebrate Columbus Day because of the discovery of the New World. That changed everything!
