About a year ago, my ancient HP DeskJet 5740 died. My dilemma was to buy a new printer or buy a used HP DeskJet 5740 so I could use up the pile of new ink cartridges I accumulated. I found an inexpensive used HP Deskjec 5740 online and bought it. It worked fine for a year and is still working, but was almost out of ink cartridges. Since Patrick (aka, My IT Specialist) was home for Christmas, I asked his advice. After doing some research, Patrick advised me to buy the HP OfficeJet Pro 6978. It was heavily discounted to less than a $100
Features: Prints up to 20 ISO ppm* in black, up to 11 ISO ppm* in color. To generate documents quickly. 4-in-1 functionality. Wireless and mobile printing capability. Color resolution up to 600 x 1200 dpi. 4 individual print cartridges are economical. 225-sheet input tray. 2.65″ touch screen.
Printing, scanning, copying. That’s all I really need. I’ve had good luck with HP printers over the years. I hope my new HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 provides reliable service like the previous HP printers I’ve used.
If you’re looking for a new printer, you might want to consider the HP Officejet Pro 6978. You might even be able to find it cheaper than I did with all the Post-Christmas sales.
Good decision, George (or should I say Patrick …)!
HP still makes good printers though they’ve left many of the hardware fields like other US companies (TI was my favourite).
Rather OT:
I remember when I bought my first printer, a “dot matrix” thingy more than 30 years ago (before that I had always used the company’s fast printers and still did to print my book list of 100 pages …). It cost me more than a thousand Deutsche Mark – would be around 1000 $ today and it was only black on white. How times have changed!
Wolf, my first printer was a dot-matrix EPSON. After that, it was all HPs.
It just amazes me that you can get a quality printer at that price. We have a new one somewhere but haven’t hooked it up. That’s always the obstacle for us. We need at IT son (or daughter).
Patti, the marketing strategy on printers is the ink cartridges. The companies like NP, EPSON, and CANON essentially sell the printers at cost. They make money on the pricey ink cartridges that always run out just when you need to print something important!
Nice choice! Our last few printers have been HP too. They are reliable and, though I was concerned like Patti, easy enough to connect that even I could do it.
I’ve noticed how much simpler and easier all these have become in recent years – computers, printers, televisions, DVR and DVD players, etc. If it is simple enough that I can do it and without excessive cursing, it must be easy!
Jeff, you’re right. The computer companies are trying to make their equipment easier to use. I still prefer wires over Bluetooth, but I’m just an Old School kind of guy.
Me too. No Bluetooth for me.
Jeff, I prefer the simplest and most reliable technology. I don’t need anything fancy, but it has to WORK!
I prefer EPSON printers. I tried an HP a couple of printers back and it didn’t have the hardware and software controls and options I like. The one I have now has an oversized scanning bed (glass) for larger items, which I use. I’m sure your new HP will meet your needs.
Speaking of stimulating the economy, we just got replacement blinds in three rooms. Whoo, blinds are expensive.
Rick, we got all new blinds last year when we replaced 15 windows. Very pricey, indeed! I like the new EPSON with the 2-year ink reservoir. I was tempted, but decided to stay with the HP. Now that I’m retired, my printing is minimal.
I’ve never had a printer, due to lack of space and especially lack of an IT expert. I go to the library if there’s something I need to print. Nancy will also print some things for me (like conv. author lists).
I’ve heard great things about HP. A friend of mine worked there in college, as a night janitor, and said the perks were wonderful. fully stocked break room, even for service staff. I think he was tempted to stay just for the snacks
Maggie, perks are had to give up. I’m going to miss my College email and voicemail accounts. They will go away unless I decide to teach part-time as an Adjunct Professor. I’m not inclined at the moment.
We have an HP ENVY 5530. Its reliable, wasn’t too pricy, and it does all that we need it to do (especially now that the girls usually print what they need to at LSU). But, man oh man, are those cartridges expensive!
Deb, you are so right about those blasted ink cartridges! They cost an arm and a leg and they always run out just when you have something vital to print out! Diane’s sister has an HP ENVY 5530 and loves it!
Since I print mainly text I’m thinking about buying a laser printer – without colour support.
But I don’t know if I really need it, didn’t buy any new SF books lately so I don’t have to print a new version of my book list – usually look at it online.
Wolf, my HP LaserJet 4 gave me years of reliable service and thousands of copies. I printed my Ph.D. on it. If your printing needs are minimal like mine, an HP or EPSON or CANON inkjet printer will fit the bill.
George, my “problem” is having two households and not enough to print – so sometimes returning from Hungary to Germany (or the other way …) and wanting to print something i have problems – because the printer hasn’t been used for more than a month …
We already have too many things which we take on the road – my laptop, my wife’s kindle (she’s very fond of that btw), the multiple mobile phones – and the chargers for the whole lot …
But obviously these are as we call them in German:
Luxury problems …
Wolf, HP has a portable printer. I have a friend in Sales and he travels a lot. He loves his HP portable printer. He says it’s rugged and reliable. You might consider that solution.
