Logan opens in 2029 with the former X-Man Wolverine (aka, James Howlett and “Logan”) played by Hugh Jackman reduced to driving a limo and bartering for anti-convulsive drugs for 90-year-old Professor X (Patrick Stewart). Albino Caliban (Stephen Merchant) plays a critical role in the plot. An 11-year-old mutant called Laura (Dafne Keen) displays disturbingly similar powers to Wolverine. Of course, there are plenty of Bad Guys chasing the Good Guys. Director James Mangold (Walk the Line, 3:20 to Yuma, and Girl, Interrupted) keeps events moving in this 137-minute movie which I found too long. Hugh Jackman has been playing Wolverine for 17 years. MARVEL will have a tough time replacing him. GRADE: B+
We’ll be seeing it on Tuesday. I did notice how long it was. I find a lot of these movies are excessively long.
Jackie thinks if they offer him enough money, Jackman might come back for another one, though he says he’s done.
Jeff, the role of Wolverine demands a lot of physical activity. Jackman’s done the role for 17 years. Time to move on.
I vowed I would see no more superhero movies and I am stuck with it now.
Patti, LOGAN is a more character-driven superhero movie. The performances are first-rate.
I prefer shorter moves and shorter books. Unlike Patti, I haven’t made any vows. However, I’m about burned out on superhero movies.
Bill, LOGAN has more depth than most superhero movies. But, it is too long for my taste.
I want to see it. Hugh was on Colbert and was asked why he hasn’t aged. He said it took no makeup to play the role, but 3 hours to look like he did on the show, which I seriously doubt. He was also talking about looking forward to eating
I’m looking forward to this, and especially seeing Stephen Merchant. I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve seen him in.
Maggie, you’re going to love LOGAN. But I think this is the last time we’ll see Hugh Jackman as Wolverine. I like Stephen Merchant, too.
The best action movie we’ve seen lately was JOHN WICK Chapter 2.
Jackie is looking forward to seeing KONG: SKULL ISLAND before we leave Florida.
Jeff, I’m on the bubble over KING KONG ISLAND. The early reviews will determine whether I see it or not.
17 years? I had no idea. I guess that’s when the 1st X-Men movie came out. I didn’t realize it had been so long. I saw the first 2, none after that. Don’t keep up with the X-Men backstory, in comics or film, but I vaguely remember a graphic novel about Wolverine losing his power to heal.
Rick, you’re right. The story of how Wolverine lost his powers was in the 2013 movie, THE WOLVERINE. You can read my review of it at http://georgekelley.org/the-wolverine-3d/
Actually, THE WOLVERINE is on television tonight, on FX.
We picked up our tickets for Tuesday.
Jeff, I liked THE WOLVERINE. I enjoyed most of the X-Men movies, too.
