After the fiasco at this year’s Academy Award ceremonies, we finally found out that Moonlight, not LA LA Land, won the Oscar for BEST PICTURE. Now, the Blu-ray version of Moonlight is available. If you haven’t seen Moonlight in the theaters, here’s your chance. I’m sure Moonlight will be on NETFLIX and other media outlets. This story of a young boy growing up in Miami with a crackhead mother shows the underside of Life. Mahershala Ali won a BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR Oscar for his role as Juan, a drug dealer who tries to help the struggling young boy, Chiron. Extras include director Barry Jenkins’ commentary and featurettes on the film’s music, ensemble and locations. GRADE: A
No grade? Anyway, it’s still showing at our local theaters!
Bob, Moonlight won the Oscar for BEST PICTURE. I thought a grade would be redundant.
George, from this year’s Oscar picks, I plan to watch MOONLIGHT, LION, and HACKSAW RIDGE. As for the fiasco, I don’t see how Faye Dunaway could have announced LA LA LAND when she was holding Emma Stone’s Best Actress card. And Warren Beatty knew something was wrong. They could have called then itself.
Prashant, I’m guessing Faye and Warren have age-related vision problems so a mistake like this was completely plausible.
Certainly ,my choice as best picture with Mainchester by the Sea close behind.
Patti, Diane and I were surprised and delighted when LA LA LAND was announced (mistakenly!) as the BEST PICTURE. Then, the reversal, with MOONLIGHT becoming the winner. I liked HIDDEN FIGURES, too.
LA LA LAND was OK, better than I’d expected, but I didn’t think it was worth 14 nominations and certainly didn’t think it was the Best Picture. I preferred HIDDEN FIGURES, but MOONLIGHT was excellent and I’m glad it won what it did. Watch the subtlety of Mahershala Ali’s performance. A well-deserved award winner.
Jeff, I also liked Mahershala Ali’s performance in HIDDEN FIGURES. A very different role from the one he played in MOONLIGHT.
I agree with Jeff, though I loved lala land, It didn’t have the intensity of moonlight or the emotional impact of hidden figures. Given mel gibsons past antics, suprized his movie even got nominated. I was pulling for hidden figures. Moonlight (and other dramas) don’t have much of an appeal for me, but I’ll catch it some time.
I think Warren B. knew there was an error, but wasn’t sure what to do. Faye goofed by not reading all of the print on the card. A simple “houston we have a problem” would have saved a lot of grief all around
Maggie, the envelope system was flawed. This kind of fiasco was bound to happen with TWO sets of envelopes!
No, a grade wouldn’t have been redundant. You described the film, but didn’t tell us if, or how much or little, you liked it. From what I’ve heard and read, it’s quite depressing, and that makes it a no-go for me. Same with MANCHESTER BY THE SEA. We put HIDDEN FIGURES and HACKSAW RIDGE on our Netflix queue.
Rick, I liked MOONLIGHT. But it’s sad and depressing (so is MANCHESTER-BY-THE-SEA). Right now, I’m more in the mood for an inspiring movie like HIDDEN FIGURES or a modern musical like LA LA LAND.
I must say that though there were sad parts, I did not find it depressing in the end.
And I wouldn’t see another Mel Gibson movie at any price.
We saw LOGAN this afternoon.
Jeff, what did you think of LOGAN? Even Diane liked it!
I’m not a fan of grades in the first place, but I can live with them and it’s your blog and you can do what you like! But, I’ve seen you praise something then give it a B, so saying it won an Oscar doesn’t necessarily translate to a specific grade! Your honor, The People rest!
Bob, I can praise aspects of a book or movie, but in the end give it a “B” because of its flaws. I give grades on my blog because I used to give grades for a living. Trust me: Bill Crider and I are very good at assigning grades! We did it for decades!
I can give grades, too! I used to operate a fanzine review zine!
Bob, I’m sure you’re a very fair grader!
