I’m a big fan of Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer so factor that into this review of their latest music CD, Not Dark Yet. This is an album of “covers.” There are plenty of cover CDs, but none have the range of this one. Lynne and Moorer sing “Not Dark Yet,” a Bob Dylan song that’s also title of their album. And “Silver Wings” sounds as good as Merle Haggard’s version with a little more sweetness. If you’re in the mood for some entertaining singing, Lynne and Moorer will delight your ears. Check out the sample below. GRADE: A-

Ihave a Shelby Lynne CD somewhere. Not familiar with her partner here.
Patti, Allison Moorer is another wonderful singer, too. NOT DARK YET has been on heavy rotation on my stereo!
You didn’t mention that Lynne is Moorer’s older sister. Moorer is also Steve Earle’s ex-wife. He produced at least one of her albums. I don’t know the reason for the divorce – Earle has been married seven times, after all! – but autism has broken up many a marriage. He talked about her and her music (and her sister) several times during Sunday’s concert.
Jeff, you’re right about the break-up of Steve Earle and Allison Moorer. For a time, Moorer stopped recording and touring.
I like it. Earle also talked, as did Emmylou Harris by the way, about Townes Van Zandt. He was Earle’s idol, and the latter did an album of Van Zandt covers.
Jeff, Townes Van Zandt’s work is underappreciated. I’ll have to check out that album of Van Zandt covers. Thanks for the heads up!
I’ll pass, being unfamiliar with the singers, the songs and the CDs.
Rick, Shelby Lynn and Allison Moorer are worth a listen.
I listened and I’ll pass, too!
