Merry Christmas to all! We will be having our traditional dinner of grilled lamb (marinated overnight in a yogurt/onion/lemon paste) with mashed potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, creamed spinach, gravy—and salmon for our daughter who doesn’t eat red meat. Yum!
Deb, we usually don’t host the Christmas feast (my brother and his wife usually do) but they just moved into a new house last week and they haven’t unpacked everything yet. So Diane volunteered to host Christmas this year. Diane’s menu includes green salad, ambrosia, cranberry salad, chicken, ham, Polish sausage, green beans, squash, mashed potatoes, and pierogi. Desserts include brown sugar cake with cranberry frosting and Croquembouche (acroquembouche or croque-en-bouche is a French dessert consisting of choux pastry puffs piled into a cone and bound with threads of caramel). Patrick and Katie have been baking up a storm!

We are getting a late start, as I slept in, but we’re soon to have a bite of breakfast and then on to opening the gifts. Then… relax until it’s time to prepare the ribeye roast, spinach soufflé, mashed potatoes, salad, and pie. There’ll be a new book to peruse, I’m sure. I hope you post on your gifts in the day or two ahead.

Steve, Merry Christmas! The photo was taken at our friend’s house last night just before we attend Midnight Mass. Luckily, we’re all healthy for the Holidays. In the past, one or more of us had colds or sinus infections for Christmas. Bummer! But it’s nearly 50 degrees here in Western NY–about 20 degrees above Normal for December 25th. Needless to say, no White Christmas this year!
Rick, Merry Christmas to you and your family. 2019 was a good year for us. One of the highlights was our PAPERBACK REVOLUTION panel at BOUCHERCON #50. Thanks again for moving Heaven and Earth to be a part of the panel despite all the scheduling moves! You’re the best!
All the best from Winnipeg where we have very little snow. This is great as my friends and I didn’t have to climb over piles of hard snow while we were delivering Christmas Cheer Board hampers for 10 days. Still a few slippery steps to manoeuvre while carrying a very large turkey, which was my job. I also had the task of making a phone call to see if the recipient was home and this year managed to not say we were on the way to deliver their Christmas tree, not a hamper. The families with children also get gifts, which in some cases for immigrant families and those in public housing may be the only gifts they receive.

Though we’re kind of a-religious of course we’ll have a small family reunion. Tomorrow my wife’s son will come here from Budapest – we’ll have a duck from a local farm. For dinner I was already allowed to try the duck liver – wonderful.
Don’t know yet what my wife will serve tomorrow, only know that I will be the helping hand again responsible for handling the dishwasher …
Does anyone have a White Christmas this year?
Here in Hungary we have 10 Celsius, around 50 Fahrenheit, some sun but also lots of rain …

The problems of family reunions …
Our young ones have 4 “appointments”, since the parents are all divorced and of course everybody wants a visit – and has some presents, especially for Rozi, the granddaughter. My wife is her favourite grandmother (of course) so they’ll stay with us until New Year’s Eve when they return to Budapest – for the fireworks!
Wolf, no snow here. But that mild weather is great for traveling. Tomorrow morning we’ll be up early to take our daughter to the Airport at 6 A.M. She’ll fly to Boston and then travel from Logan Airport to her job. If we had a Normal Christmas, we’d be dealing with snow and ice!
