Daniel Boyd’s new novel, The Devil & Streak Wilson, features a convivial Devil who enjoys pulp fiction stories like Deadeye Davis Weekly Adventure. But, of course, the Devil being the Devil is in the business of Temptation. His target is Streak Wilson, a cowboy who known far and wide as the Best Shot in Ware County.
Streak Wilson is an earnest young man who resists the Devil’s offer to buy his soul, but in a moment of weakness, makes a seemingly small deal with the Devil. And then Streak learns any deal with the Devil is deadly.
I enjoyed the story of Streak and his friends, Frenchy and Pablo, as they deal with the Devil’s cunning game. The conclusion bursts with action!
You can read my reviews of Daniel Boyd’s other novels, Nada and Easy Death here and here. If you want a Western with a twist, give The Devil & Streak Wilson a try. GRADE: B+
There are so many books and series I know nothing about. This is one of them. A bit like Robert Johnson meeting the Devil on the highway.
Patti, I think you know “Daniel Boyd” better than you think!
Johnson was another member of the “Club 27”. I looked for his music when I read about his influence from Eric Clapton, a long long time ago.
I liked Dan’s first two books a lot and bought the Kindle edition of this one. As soon as I finish the new Jeffrey Siger book today, this is next on my list.
Jeff, you’ll enjoy THE DEVIL & STREAK WILSON.
Doesn’t sound like my kind of thing. I’ve never particularly enjoyed deal with the Devil stories.
@ Jeff: We didn’t know there was a new Siger book out. I went to the library site, though they are closed, where recently we’ve been able to put holds on books. They show the book, but there is a message saying “available but not holdable”. Weird, never saw that before. I’ll be glad when they finally reopen.
I missed it when it first came out too, Rick. Can’t remember where I read about it, but my library, which does generally buy his books, didn’t have this one in any format, I ended up having to buy the ebook. I wouldn’t call it the best in the series, but it was good as usual. Doesn’t sound like Mykonos is a place we would enjoy much these days. Actually, now I see it came out a year ago, so you may have read it already. THE MYKONOS MOB. Now I see it is being re-released this month as ISLAND OF SECRETS. But the original is available on Kindle for $6.15, while the new edition of the same book is $7.99! There are also hardback and paperback editions.
This isn’t my thing. Our libraries are also closed, even for book return. I always have an audio book in my car, and was just about to check out more when they closed. I have the one I’m listening to (glass houses by Louise Penny) and a wodehouse one. I do have many of my own, but since I’m not doing much driving, they will last a long long time.
Kindle’s must be a life saver to people without mountains of books to be read
Maggie, I agree with you on KINDLE. I have about 200 e-books waiting to be read on my iPad. Our Libraries have notices NOT to return books “UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.”
Sounds like purile crud to me.
Bob, I thought you like Westerns.
Thank you Bob; you’re on the right track.
My ambition is to see this book condemned from the pulpit and banned from schools by folks who haven’t read it. You can imagine my chagrin at seeing it come out just as schools are closed and churches mostly empty. But if I can get a few more critics like you to sound off, I may make it yet.
Spread the word….
I’ll do my best.
I’ve just celebrated seven years as a minister of the gobsmacked. Glad to use my pulpit profitably.
