THE OSCARS 2021

I have no special knowledge of who will win these Oscars, but here are my best guesses about the results of the weirdest movie year in my lifetime:

BEST PICTURE: Nomadland

BEST DIRECTOR: Chloé Zhao, Nomadland

BEST ACTOR: Chadwick Boseman, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom

BEST ACTRESS: Andra Day, The United States vs. Billie Holiday

BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR: Daniel Kaluuya, Judas and the Black Messiah

BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS: Yuh-Jung Youn, Minari

You are probably right although I think Frances McDormand will win for Nomadland. I just hope Glen Close doesn’t win.

After seeing SOUND OF METAL last night (which I liked) I’ve still only seen four of the major nominees. Also liked NOMADLAND and TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO SEVEN, but MANK was boring. This may be the least interested I’ve ever been in the Oscars, and I probably won’t even watch.

Michael, Diane and I will watch THE OSCARS for bit just to see what Steven Soderbergh does to liven the presentations up. I knew you would like SOUND OF METAL.

After watching NOMADLAND last night, I definitely think Zhao deserves to win. Not sure if McDormand will get her third Oscar. Overall, we both thought that SOUND OF METAL was a more impressive achievement, though I don’t know either comes close to the old-time definition of a Best Picture winner. We’ve also seen MANK (a major disappointment) and TRIAL OF THE CHICAGO 7 (which was way better than I’d expected), and will be watching PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN this afternoon. I do want to see MINARI and THE FATHER. I do have one prediction: historic low ratings for the Oscar telecast.

Jeff, most of my movie-watching friends have only seen some of the OSCAR nominees on streaming platforms like AMAZON Prime Video, HULU, and Netflix. Theaters are opening up here, but at only 33% capacity. I don’t know how that will keep the lights on.

I’ve seen so few of the nominated films that I’m just shooting in the dark. The family is getting together as usual to watch the show, but I’m a giant shrug emoji about who will win.

Deb, so many movies were “postponed” during the Pandemic that this field of films is hardly representative of a normal movie season. I’m hoping for a few surprises tonight.

I think George’s picks are probably right on with the possible exception of Viola Davis instead of Day. I am watching more to see how they put the show on rather than who wins. I saw SOUL last night and it had the same feel as IN AND OUT and UP. More about philosophical ideas than any plot about either Jazz or Soul. Why do animated movies approach topics regular movies never touch. I loved the look of it, and the music but the plot was hokum for me.

Patti, Viola Davis was great in MA RAINEY’S BLACK BOTTOM. But The United States vs. Billie Holiday moved me as did Andra Day’s rookie performance.

Frankly, I don’t think that many people saw the movie. We’ve seen the other four nominees in this category – we saw Carey Mulligan, who was terrific, in PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN this afternoon. If I had a vote it would be tough. I love Frances McDormand but she has two Oscars. Viola Davis was almost a Supporting role but she keeps you riveted when she is on screen.

Jeff, I’m hoping for a couple surprise winners tonight. When the favored nominees all win, it makes for a tedious night.

I’m with Patti, though I’d like to see audra day win, I think Viola Davis will win. The other picks I think are spot on. I’m recording the show, so I can skip thru commercials.

Didn’t see any! Haven’t heard of most, including the actors! Don’t give a rat’s ass about the telecast! So tell me, George, who are you wearin’?
