THE SOUL SESSIONS By Joss Stone

Joss Stone rose to fame in late 2003 with her multi-platinum debut album, The Soul Sessions, which made the 2004 Mercury Prize shortlist. Her second album, the similarly multi-platinum Mind Body & Soul (2004), topped the UK Albums Chart and spawned the top ten hit “You Had Me“, Stone’s most successful single on the UK Singles Chart to that point. Both the album and single received one nomination at the 2005 Grammy Awards, while Stone herself was nominated for Best New Artist, and in an annual BBC poll of music critics, Sound of 2004, Stone was ranked fifth as a predicted breakthrough act of 2004. She became the youngest British female singer to top the UK Albums Chart. Stone’s third album, Introducing Joss Stone, released in March 2007, achieved gold record status by the RIAA and yielded the second-ever highest debut for a British female solo artist on the Billboard 200, and became Stone’s first top five album in the US.

The Soul Sessions presents “Blue-Eyed Soul” with Joss Stone’s heart-felt delivery. My favorite song on The Soul Sessions is Stone’s version of The Dells’s hit, “For the Love of You.” If you’re in the mood for some soulful songs, I recommend The Soul Sessions. Do you like soul music? GRADE: B+

I like soul music and blue eyed soul such as Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes, Willy Deville. The Righteous Brothers but must admit I don’t know Stone’s music although I know of her.

I like but haven’t loved what I’ve heard from Stone over the years, for the most part. Amy Winehouse and a few others arising about the same time (Duffy seems to have flamed out…and, sadly, Winehouse succumbed to her addictions) were more my speed.

Todd, I loved Duffy’s first album (and still play it regularly). Amy Winehouse had talent, but her demons destroyed her. Joss Stone’s trajectory went straight up…then down.

I’d heard the name but not the music so I checked it out on YouTube. It’s not bad but not my thing.

I have her first album—I liked it but she obviously not enough to keep up with her career. The biggest shock here is realizing that Stone has been on the music scene for close to 20 years! Although their timelines and styles are somewhat different, I tend to group her in my mind with other British female singers like Adele, Duffy, Lily Allen, and Amy Winehouse. I’m sorry to hear what happened to Duffy—I loved her “Rock Ferry” CD.

Deb, I still play Duffy’s ROCK FERRY and Amy Winehouse and of course, Adele. Joss Stone got off to a fast start with her musical career 20 years ago…and then it tailed off.

I know her and like what little I’ve heard, but it wasn’t much. She did “Cry Baby Cry” with Sean Paul on Santana’s ALL THAT I AM album in 2006. Good album, by the way, also featured him working with Michelle Branch, Mary J. Blige, Steven Tyler, will.i.am., Bo Bice, and Los Lonely Boys.

Jeff, I have a copy of ALL THAT I AM around here somewhere. I’ll look for it and listen to it again! Thanks for the nudge!

I was listening to Janis Joplin yesterday and this girl is like a Joplin tribute band singer! Still cute!
