Encanto is a Disney animated mystery. Featuring the voices of Stephanie Beatriz, María Cecilia Botero, John Leguizamo, Mauro Castillo, Jessica Darrow, Angie Cepeda, Carolina Gaitán, Diane Guerrero, and Wilmer Valderrama, the film follows a multigenerational Colombian family, the Madrigals, led by a matriarch whose children and grandchildren—except for Mirabel Madrigal (Beatriz)—receive magical gifts from a “miracle” candle that helps them serve the people in their rural community called “the Encanto”.
When Mirabel learns that the family is losing their magic, she sets out to find out what is happening, and save her family and their magical house. Mirabel follows the clues that lead to the Past and a missing family member, Bruno, whose Gift was that he could see the Future.
Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote the music for Encanto. I liked the plot and the silly characters. Mirabel–pitied because she has no “Gift”–shows she has investigative powers and leadership skills. Encanto, like many Disney movies, is inspiring. GRADE: B

Patti, I like Lin-Manuel Miranda’s music. ENCANTO would have been a bigger movie if people felt safe about sitting in a theater for a couple of hours. The movie proved to be popular on Disney+.
I suspect that teens (and a smaller subset of like-minded elders) still dominate the cinema audience these years, a factor made more intense by Covid concern…hence the land-office business for the latest Spider-Man film…and parents as well as older adult filmgoers going out On Their Own Ticket remain more skittish. I wonder if ENCANTO did Really well at the remaining/regrouping drive-ins, as well as, or course, home rentals.
Todd, according to the WALL STREET JOURNAL, ENCANTO took in $93 million which isn’t bad for a Pandemic film.

Definitely a cast I wouldn’t mind seeing together in “live-action”, more adult-aimed fare as well. (This might be more true of the women in the cast than Valderrama, and lust isn’t the Only factor there…)
Todd, I suspect that there’s a sequel to ENCANTO in the works.
Cartoon again, though. Charming enough, I’m sure (I certainly liked LILO AND STITCH the feature-length cartoon, for example…and MULAN the cartoon was probably a better film than the Xi-approved live action remake, which I haven’t seen…).
