SHE-HULK: ATTORNEY AT LAW [Disney+]

Fans of Orphan Black will be happy to see Tatiana Maslany back in an action series like She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. I watched the first episode on Disney+ and basically it was an origin story of how Jennifer Walters (Tatiana Maslany), a practicing attorney, becomes the She-Hulk.

Mark Ruffalo (from Buffalo) returns as the Hulk to “mentor” Jennifer on how to deal with her new Hulk-iness. Jessica Gao serves as head writer with Kat Coiro leading the directing team.

She-Hulk: Attorney at Law consists of nine episodes. It will be interesting to see how the storylines handle Jennifer Walters and her complicated life as a thirtysomething single attorney who also becomes the 6-foot-7-inch powerful green superhero, She-Hulk.

I plan to watch the first episode later today and I really have no idea what to expect. Because I’m really, really old, She-Hulk came along well after I stopped reading Marvel comics on a regular basis, so I will be approaching the character with a fresh mind. I have read, though, that Marvel/Disney plan to present the series as a comedy rather than an action series. We’ll see.

Jerry, yes, there are some comedic moments in SHE-HULK. We’ll see what the MARVEL team has in store for this off-beat character.

I find it very odd that they would hire Maslany for this when so much of her performance is relegated to mere motion capture (especially given the growing backlash to CGI, particularly under this brand). It would have made so much more sense to hire a taller, muscular woman to co-star here. They could have ended up with a breakout star which also would have helped in the publicity which now heavily consist of cast and crew defending the Shrekish quality animation.
It’s also beginning to seem like the expiration date for this kind of show is fast approaching. There was a lot of enthusiasm about it during the pandemic but the response has been somewhat muted. Given all the in the streaming industry (Disney lost over a billion turmoil the game last year alone) I have to wonder if we’ll see many more shows like this.
Oh well, I hope it’s at least a good time killer for everyone.

Byron, I’m a fan of Maslany so I’ll watch anything she’s in. As you point out, choosing Maslany for SHE-HULK wasn’t an obvious choice. And, I tend to agree with you that the Super-Hero movie popularity may be waning. As for the MARVEL series on Disney+, I was underwhelmed by HAWKEYE. MS MARVEL was so-so. We’ll have to see where SHE-HULK goes with its audience.

I like Maslany. She was very good in HBO’s Perry Mason. I will not be watching this. I always thought The Hulk about the silliest of all Marvel characters.

Jerry and I must be in the same age bracket. I read THE INCREDIBLE HULK from issue #1 in 1962 up through the end of the ’60s, when the Hulk and (Gi)ant-Man shared billing in TALES TO ASTOONISH, , but SHE-HULK comic debuted long after I left the fold. I’ll check out the TV show, but HAWKEYE and WANDA-VISION were underwhelming.

Jeff, Kellyanne Conway has a book out. Now Jared has a book out. I’m sure there Ivanka and Tiffany have book projects. They all are just packaging up their lies for the MAGA crowd to consume.

We don’t have Disney+ either. When we signed up for Hulu we considered getting the bundle with Disney+, but I could not find enough on there to justify the additional cost. But this I would like to see.

Tracy, after watching only one episode–new episodes come out on Thursdays–of SHE-HULK it’s too soon for me to render an opinion on the series. I may have an update after watching four or five episodes.
