Here near the Danube we have more than 10 degrees (Celsius of course, ie 50 Fahrenheit) and Xmas starts on the “Holy Evening” so we went yesterday afternoon around the village and to our little lake to look at all the decorations – millions of blinking lights and hundreds of Santas climbing up to the roofs.
Wolf, thanks for the Holiday wishes! The worst of the blizzard is over. I’m about to fire up Big Orange and snow blow the driveway and the sidewalks. Because of the drifting snow it’s hard to know how much snow we actually got. I would guess a minimum of two feet. But I can see snow drifts of about six feet! Temperatures right now are 19 degrees with a wind chill temperature of 1 degree!
And a joyous Festivus to you and you and yours! Weather’s not bad here. Rainy but not freezing! We went to Kristine’s yesterday for food and presents and today Stephanie and her kids will come here! I got a gift card I already spent on a French tank model (CHAR 2C)! I think I should take my pills and go to bed now! It’s after 2 a.m.!
Merry Christmas to all! Hope you’re staying warm—the pictures I’ve seen from the Buffalo area are some next-level Arctic wildness! Temperatures chilly here (for Louisiana)—we haven’t been above freezing since Wednesday and we’re running our faucets 24/7–but no blizzard! We’re having our traditional dinner of grilled lamb, mashed potatoes, creamed spinach, and Yorkshire pudding. John’s had the lamb marinating in a yogurt-onion-lemon mix overnight, and Julia has made a strawberry-ginger pie for dessert using a recipe from the Shakespearean cookbook you sent me, George. Looking forward to a true Renaissance meal today!
Deb, Merry Christmas to you and your family! I’m glad Julie likes that Shakespearean cookbook I sent you! I just snowblowed my driveway and snowblowed my next-door neighbor’s driveway. The snow in the apron was about three feet high: densely packed and a challenge to move. Our Christmas menu (subject to last minute changes) is Turkey, stuffing, white potatoes, sweet potato casserole, green beans, jello salad, Mac & Cheese, fennel. Desserts include apple pie, carrot cake, honey cake, Christmas cookies. Katie is also going to bake some rolls to serve with the Turkey. Your menu sounds amazing!

We had only a few inches of snow, wit wind gusts up to 70 mph and lows in the minus-double-digits. Fortunately, there was no repeat of the Great Ice Storm of 20-whatever. It bothers me a bit to hear this referred to as a “once in a generation storm” when I can recall two similar ones.
Dan, I agree with you on the mis-use of “generational storm” when Western NY just got hit with 80 inches of snow in November and now, a month later, we’re dealing with a three-day blizzard, 50 mph winds, and blowing snow!
Glad to hear you are all OK. Jackie was really concerned after seeing all the reports from Buffalo and environs, not to mention the rest of Western NY. I told her with Big Orange and the generator you could handle it. That carrot cake looks amazing! We had a high of 15 yesterday but we’re already up to 26 today, though the wind still is making it feel a lot colder. There will be a gradual daily warm up until we hit the 50s by New Year’s.
We had our traditional Jewish Chinese Christmas meal on Friday since the weather was bad, so we’re having pizza and Caesar salad and chocolate pudding pie today, plus more Italian food tomorrow. We’re go out on Tuesday.
We watched our traditional British TV Christmas Specials yesterday – THE GOOD LIFE, DEATH IN PARADISE, THE DARLING BUDS OF MAY, and GAVIN & STACY. Today is MEET ME IN ST. LOUIS and LOVE ACTUALLY, plus probably a MIDSOMER MURDERS.
Jeff, Tell Jackie you’re right: with Big Orange and our natural gas generator, we can deal with just about anything! But, plenty of people in Western NY are without power. The snow plows are just starting to clear the main streets. Fortunately we have five cops living on our street so the plows go up and down with regularity! We already have 23 deaths–mostly people trapped in their cars when the blizzard hit and could not be rescued. This time around, the NFTA closed the I-90 and blocked trucks from getting stuck and jamming up the roads for days. I snowblowed our driveway and sidewalks, did my next door neighbor’s driveway (he was shoveling three feet of packed snow in the apron put there by the snow plow), and helped to push out a neighbor’s car which got stuck. What’s really weird is that the arctic temps we’ve had for days will soon be going away and we’ll have 50 degree temperatures by Friday!
Merry Christmas George. Due to the logistics of my large family we are not getting together until New Year’s Eve morning. Morning because of the number of toddlers who all get cranky in the afternoon if they miss their nap.
Thanks Merry Christmas. I went to dinner last night, a tradition, and tonight the BF & I are going to a friends for dinner. Will be about 20 people, with prime rib. I’m bringing a large sugar free cheescake from our best Jewish Deli. We’re going to see my aunt first on the way, and I bought her a slice of the cheescake. $10!!! the large one was only $45. Can’t wait to try it. They are at larry’s house, which is good as I might have tried to take an undetectable taste from my aunts, (not really, no room in my fridge).
The temp for Santee (a suburb where we’re going) was forecast at 81 degrees. I guess it makes up for the earthquakes??
A good day, with Santa remembering all of us (and forgetting the times I’ve been naughty). A super-yummy home-made squash soup, Turkey, stuffing ( a new recipe!), mashed potaoes, roast vegetables, and some sort of super spicy Indonesian dish that Walt made over rice with lime and pickeled cabbage. Yum. for dessert, there were the Rolo cookies that everyone made on Christmas Eve — all followed by a four-hour nap which I greatly appreciated! Monday, we’re headed out to a Vietnamese restaurant for lunch, most likely followed by another nap. Naps are good.
The weather here is chilly so we’ve been ignoring it.
And, yes, I now have a computer keyboard with all the letters on it!
And now it’s on to a fabulous New Year! May you, Diane, Patrick, and Katie have the same!
Patti, this blizzard was an extreme event. The death toll keeps mounting. A 27-year-old man was found death in Lockport because of carbon monoxide poisoning because he didn’t clear his snow-clogged vents.
Happy holidays despite all the snow in your region. We were lucky here in Winnipeg with no Christmas snow storm. Seems that most of Canada got hit and the airports were filled with travellers unable to get to their destination before Christmas. Been cold here during December and I had to haul out a toque and my garbage mitts. Tradional garbage mitts are leather mitts with a knitted woolen mitt inside. Nothing warmer. More commercial ones have a fleece lining.
Kent, after days of blizzard conditions and arctic temperatures, the weather will shift into Warm Mode: 50 degrees by Friday! Love your garbage mitt story!
