HEART–GREAT HITS/LIVE and BOB SEGER: GREATEST HITS

I’ve been listening to a couple of Greatest Hits CDs from the 1990s. Heart toured extensively in the 1980s when their videos were popular on MTV. Bob Seger and his band showed up in Western NY just a few years ago, Pre-Pandemic. Their show was sold-out.

The glaring omission on Heart–Greatest HIts/Live is the absence of “These Dreams,” one of Heart’s biggest hits. Otherwise, this CD has most of their hits: “Barracuda,” “Crazy On You,” “Dreamboat Annie,” “Dog & Butterfly,” and “Magic Man.” Plus some filler.

Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band/Greatest Hits (1994) has “Like a Rock,” best known for being featured in Chevrolet truck commercials throughout the 1990s and early 2000s. I love “Night Moves” and “We’ve Got Tonight.”

Are you a fan of Heart or Bob Seger? Do you remember these songs? Any favorites? GRADE: B (for both)

If it’s possible for someone as popular as Seger to be underrated, Seger is. I can’t really say anything bad about Heart, but their music just ain’t my thing.

Michael, I agree with you that Seger is underrated. He hit a goldmine when Chevy picked “Like a Rock” for their truck commercials!

I like Heart—my favorite by them is “Crazy on You”, especially the unaccompanied guitar introduction on the long/album version. I also like Bob Seger—but where is my favorite, “Rambling Gambling Man”? Of the songs on this album, “Still the Same” is probably my favorite.

Deb, I missed “Rambling Gambling Man” not being included. RAMBLING GAMBLING MAN was Seger’s first album (1969). “Rambling Gambling Man” is on Seger’s first live album:‘ “Live’ Bullet is a live album by American rock band Bob Seger & the Silver Bullet Band, released in April 1976. It was recorded at Cobo Hall in Detroit, Michigan, during the heyday of that arena’s time as an important rock concert venue.”

I used to love Heart but their stuff hasn’t really held up for me.
Bob Seger is a perennial favorite. Night Moves is probably my all-time favorite but missing tracks that I like are Her Strut, Fire Lake, and Shame on the Moon.

    Love Bob Seger:

“I woke last night to the sound of thunder,
How far off, I sat and wondered.
Started humming a song from 1962
Ain’t it funny how the night moves,
When you just don’t seem to have as much to lose
    Strange how the night moves
    With Autumn closing in.”

    Classic.

    We saw him in concert:
    June 1996 Jones Beach
Dec. 2011 Madison Square Garden (joined by Springsteen on “Old Time Rock & Roll”)
Dec. 2014 Madison Square Garden (opener was The J. Geils Band)
May 2019 Jones Beach – the farewell tour

Besides “Night Moves” – the song that made him a national rather than a regional star – I like so many others: Turn the Page, Against the Wind, We’ve Got Tonight, Old Time Rock & Roll, Like a Rock.

Greatest Hits is OK, but my favorite is the live NINE TONIGHT album.

Queen is OK but I was never a big fan.

Never a fan of Heart. I like Segar. Being in the Detroit area he was played to death in the 70’s. This greatest hits is missing too many good songs-Ramblin Gamblin Man, East Side Story, Heavy Music. I was at the Cobo show which used for his live album. Spirit was the opening act.

Todd, in addition to the Wilson sisters health problems, Ann and Nancy seem to be feuding right now. Of course, it’s over money.
