Last Thursday night, Diane and I went to our local Regal Theater and enjoyed the HD cinecast of A Prairie Home Companion. If you’ve seen the Robert Altman film, you’ll know what to expect: Garrison Keillor singing silly songs and telling silly stories, a blue-grass group, a lovely woman singer, some dandy sound effects (you have to pretend you’re listening to this on a radio), and a country-western artist. It’s a formula that’s worked for over 30 years. For this particular performance, Diane and I both though lovely singer Sara Watkins stole the show. Her songs were terrific. So, of course, the next day I had to travel to BORDERS with a 33% OFF coupon and buy Sara Watkins’ solo CD. Sara Watkins is a member of the blue-grass band, Nickle Creek. In her A Prairie Home Companion performance and on her CD, Sara Watkin’s sings with a voice that’s clear as glass. She plays the fiddle and the mandolin. Listen to “Where Will You Be” below and you’ll hear some wonderful music!
She’d stand out in any bunch much like Serena Ryder does.
Sara Watkins stood out amid all the talent on the A PRAIRIE HOME COMPANION stage, Patti. Every song she sang was moving.
Bluegrass, though, George. So, you’d never tried Nickel Creek? The Wunderkinds of bluegrass.
Uncle Earl might well catch your ear, too. Also, had you seen the PHC telecasts previously?
I’m going to listen to some Nickel Creek, Todd. I’m not a big bluegrass fan, but I’ll check out Uncle Earl, too.
Very nice. I’m listening to the CD on Rhapsody right now.
I liked everything on Sara Watkins’ solo CD, Bill.
Wow, that is one S A D song. I couldn’t listen to a whole album of that. I listened to Nickel Creek and it’s much better, but I doubt I’d buy an album.
I do suggest you take a listen to the soundtrack to How to Train Your Dragon, it’s pretty good.
Yes, Rick, I had a lump in my throat when Sara Watkins performed “Where Will You Be” during the cinecast. But, I like genuine sad songs. I have the soundtrack to HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON on order.
I just bought and downloaded that soundtrack, George.
By the way, the birthday swag included that Winwood collection you reviewed here some time back and I immediately put on my wish list. So in a way, it’s from you as well as my wife. Thanks!
Love Birthday presents like that Steve Winwood collection, Rick. Enjoy!
