ECHO By Jack McDevitt

I’ve read and enjoyed Jack McDevitt’s previous books in his Alex & Chase series so I was eager to read the just published new novel in the series, Echo. Artifacts dealer Alex Benedict and pilot Chase Kolpath encounter a strange marker with cryptic lettering on it. Then, the first of three attempts on their lives occurs. That only makes Alex more motivated to track down the origin of the marker and solve the mysteries behind it. If you haven’t read the previous books in this series–A Talent for War, Polaris, Seeker, and The Devil’s Eye–you’re missing some great contemporary SF adventures. Each book is essentially a mystery so if you enjoy puzzle novels, you’ll find these books great fun, too. GRADE: B+

I generally start at the beginning of a series, too, Jeff. But SEEKER was the first book of McDevitt’s that I read so I had to go back and read the earlier novels in the series.

I’m guessing the Multnomah Public Libary isn’t going to have A TALENT FOR WAR, Rick. I think it was a paperback original. The books in the Alex & Chase series are pretty much stand-alone novels. You really don’t need to read the previous books in order to enjoy any of the volumes.

The Brooklyn Public Library has it so don’t assume Portland doesn’t.

Otherwise, the Paperback Exchange has a copy.

I’m impressed, Jeff! With the budget cuts, most libraries in Western New York only stock recent paperbacks or Oprah Book Club paperbacks.

I think someone there must have a thing for old sf paperbacks as the Central Branch at Grand Army Plaza seems to have a lot in storage. All you do is go to your account and put it on hold and it will be delivered for pickup to whatever local branch you specify, usually within a week or so.

    Pretty good system.
