THE ACOLYTE [Disney+]

The Acolyte, a new 8-episode series on Disney+, is set 100 years before Star Wars: Episode 1: The Phantom Menace (1999). The series opens with an intense fight between Jedi knight Indara played by Carrie-Anne Moss–you might remember her from The Matrix–and assassin Mae Aniseya played by Amandla Stenberg.

Why does Mae want to murder four Jedi knights? Who trained Mae? Can Jedi knight Sol played by Lee Jung-jae (you might know him from Squid Game) investigate the murders and discover the power behind the deadly plot? These and other questions will be answered in the next six weeks. Right now, two episodes are available on Disney+ and a new episode will be released each week. GRADE: Incomplete, but trending towards a C+

Another station I don’t get, but I wouldn’t watch it anyway! Woke Disney isn’t welcome on my screen!

If they got back to their original mission–to make wholesome family movies–people might start watching them again!

Bob, I agree with you. Too many of the STAR TREK movies substitute CGI Special Effects for a good plot.

Wasn’t blown away by SW in ’78 (maybe caught it at the very end of ’77)…thought it pretty but dumb…and while I enjoyed the remnants of Leigh Brackett’s script in EMPIRE, that’s about as close to excited about the series as I’ve been. Still haven’t seen films 3 (release chronology) nor 6, and not more than a few minutes of any of the series or films since. (Saw 4 & 5 because Alice loved the first three films as a kid, and by six, she was pretty much done, too…she went with another friend.)

Todd, Star Wars fatigue is a problem for Disney. It doesn’t help that many of these TV series lack the Force of the original series.

Is there no end? No end? I suppose there are hardcore fans who welcome every beating of this dead horse. (Said in snark by one who enjoys beating several dead literary/cinematic horses himself, only not the STAR WARS variety.)

Fred, Disney sees STAR WARS as a money-making franchise. A core of STAR WARS fans will watch THE ACOLYTE and buy the merchandise. And Disney will generate more TV content for their streaming service. I’m hoping they improve the quality.

Have never subscribed to DISNEY. But I did get a free weekend to watch the doc on the Beatles. I heard yesterday they are making four movies about the Beatles. One from each perspective. They have lined up four great actors for it. If it ever happens.
