SANTANA: SUPERNATURAL LIVE [DVD/CD Set]

While Jeff and Jackie Meyerson were enjoying the Santana concert at Jones Beach this weekend, I was watching Santana: Supernatural Live, a DVD from 2000. Santana also invited some “friends” to participate in this concert: Carter Before, Dave Matthews, Sarah McLachian, Everlast, Cee-Lo, Lauryn Hill, The Product G*B, Wayne Shorter, and Rob Thomas.

Supernatural celebrates its 25th Anniversary this year. “It reached No. 1 in eleven countries, including the US for 12 non-consecutive weeks, where it is certified 15× platinum. The first of six singles from the album, “Smooth” featuring Matchbox Twenty singer Rob Thomas, and co-written by Thomas and Itaal Shur, was a number one success worldwide and topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for 12 weeks. The next, “Maria Maria“, featuring the Product G&B, was number one in the US for 10 weeks. Supernatural is Santana’s best-selling album to date, the best-selling album by a Hispanic artist in music history, and one of the best-selling albums of all time, selling an estimated 30 million copies worldwide.”–Wikipedia

He’s pretty good! I’ve seen him live, believe it or else! My favorite of his is Samba Pa Ti, which isn’t on this album!

Bob, I’m always amazed at the number of singers and groups you’ve seen! I’m sure you like Santana’s performance at Woodstock!

Actually, I’ve seen very few bands/singers live! Jeff Meyerson is the champ in that regard! Yes, Santana was great at Woodstock!

Bob, I finished reading TRAVELING last week, a biography of Joni Mitchell. Her manager kept her from appearing at Woodstock and Joni has never forgiven him for that dumb move! But Joni Mitchell went on to write the classic “Woodstock.”

Deb, those are classic Santana songs. Jeff Meyerson thinks Santana may have some health issues because he sat during last weekend’s Jones Beach concert.

Deb, I’m living in the Woodstock days of SANTANA – Soul Sacrifice, Jingo, Evil Ways. He did “Black Magic Woman” and “Oye Como Va?” early in the concert. He has a great percussion section.

Jackie is a big fan of “Smooth.”

Yes, obviously we are fans – this is the 12th time we’ve seen Santana in concert since 2002. Eight have been at Jones Beach. Opening acts have included Rusted Root, Los Lonely Boys (twice), Derek Trucks Band, Steve Winwood, Allman Brothers, Rod Stewart, Doobie Brothers, Earth Wind & Fire, and Counting Crows. Only twice did he perform without an opening act.

PS – Of course, Jackie has this DVD too.

      Jeff, I also envy you!
But that goes for almost everybody here who has visited so many concerts.
I was Happy in the 70s when I found their LÜs – and in the 6ßs I couldn’t afford to by them, just copied some from friends to cassettes.
What I really love about him is his willingness to cooperate with other musicians.
Wiki has a nice list of that – my favourite is Steve Winwood and him playing “Whiter shade of pale”
Afaik after medical problems at a concert in 2022 he doesn’t tour anymore.

Sorry, that should have been LPs of course. I really should have a look at my LP collection some day – so much stuff I bought in London and later in Manhattan – remember that music store near Times Square?

Todd, I have followed Santana over his long and successful career. Not a week goes by when I don’t listen to one of his CDs!
