THE BEST OF 70s SUPERGROUPS and THE GREATEST HITS OF THE 80s: POWER BALLADS

I spent the week after the Election playing comfort music to soothe my disappointment. “Comfort Music” for me are hits from the 1970s and 1980s. It was nice to hear that “Help Is On the Way” from the Little River Band. Styx tempted me with the idea of “Come Sail Away” on that 4-year cruise (to escape the next Trump 4 years!). Only $250,000!

Hall and Oates reminded me that I was “Out of Touch” with the current political situation. Who needs competence? Trump doesn’t. And Trump and Melania seem to be “Making Love Out of Nothing at All” according to Air Supply.

How are you coping with the results of the Election? Does music help? GRADE : B (for both)

I’m Dancing in the Street (Martha and the Vandellas)! I think the next four years will be good for us all and eons better than what would happen if the Cackling Hyena had been elected! If I’m wrong, I’ll admit it, but if I’m right I want you and the other TDS sufferers to fess up!

I’ve been alternating between hopelessness, incendiary rage, mordant humor, muttering “I’m glad I’m old”, and taking refuge in reading & listening to music. Although my favorite song here is “Out of Touch” by Hall & Oates, I give the edge to the seventies collection which has more recognizable hits by bigger artists.

Deb, I have hopes that the Resistance will prevent the worst of Trump’s plans. I agree with you: THE BEST OF 70s SUPERGROUPS edges out THE GREATEST HITS OF THE 80s: POWER BALLADS.

I couldn’t make a steady diet of it but (Deb is right, as always) the Seventies collection has more recognizable hits by bigger artists. As for the so-called power ballads, seldom has a two-word description been wrong in both ways. No power, no ballads. Ptah!

As for coping, I’m going to go with a recent meme I saw on the internet and but a bunch of pinatas because all I want to do is beat someone with a stick and then eat candy.

I know a couple of the ’80s songs, but all of the ’70s, which – like Deb and Jerry – would be my choice. We have been listening to music, currently going through CDs of Sondheim shows in order, so far COMPANY, FOLLIES (the live Lincoln Center concert version), A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC, and PACIFIC OVERTURES. We are currently halfway through SWEENEY TODD. The man was a genius.

Jeff, my favorite Sondheim song is “Send in the Clowns.” Apparently, that will be the theme song to the Senate hearings on Trump’s Cabinet picks.

Seeing as the ’70s of Tricky Dick and Crooked Spiro, and the ’80s of Saint Ronnie, Mother Thatcher, and Jerry Falwell were the beginning of today’s sorry state of train-wreck politics and rancid social discourse, I guess these comps are fitting. With all respect to my friend Cap’n Bob, and conceding that the Dems waged a piss-poor campaign, the only ones who’ll benefit from Trump II will be Teflon Don and his gang of con artists, crazies, and robber barons. Of all the tracks on the CDs, I hate hate hate “Takin’ Care of Business.” I’d almost rather have a hornet dive-bomb my ear canal.

Fred, Trump claims he’ll be “Takin’ Care of Business” once he gets inside the White House, but History shows that second term Presidents rarely achieve anything. Plus, with Trump’s terrible choices for his Cabinet, I suspect he’ll have to burn a lot of Political Capital to get the Senate to approve them.

Happily, even the Drumpf bunch is realizing that Gaetz won’t make it through the process…one wonders to what extent his was the choice that was meant to make, say, RFK2 and Oz and the rest of the jackals seem competent by comparison.

Hm…living on a cruise ship for four years sounds even more purgatorial than living with another Drumpf Admin…particularly since both would be in place.

I’ve been taking a lot of refuge in comedy, political and apolitical.

The ’70s album has more stuff I really don’t like on it…along with stuff I do, if essentially only the Kinks and Santana songs, and a few I wouldn’t mind hearing again such as the Rare Earth entry. Then there’s the Guess Who song and a number of the others, but particularly “American Woman”, a song I’ve reviled since its release. The ’80s album has less dire lows (though Air Supply is another I need never hear again), and even fewer highs, though I didn’t hate the Thompson Twins, Pointer Sisters nor Hall and Oates songs. Just don’t own copies and don’t feel the lack.

    Glad they’re helping!
