STEPHEN SONDHEIM’S OLD FRIENDS

Diane, Katie, and I went to see this musical revue to Sondheim over the Mother’s Day Weekend in New York City. Bernadette Peters and Lea Salonga are the Big Names that have strong Sondheim connections who headline this show. They have plenty of talented singers to back them up. Sondheim’s Old Friends features songs from his iconic musicals like Sweeney Todd, Into the Woods, and A Little Night Music.

The two-hour show includes 40 Sondheim songs. Katie was moved by Bernadette Peters’s rendition of “Send in the Clowns.” If you’re a Stephen Sondheim fan, this revue is a Must-See event! GRADE: A

I confess I’ve never warmed to Sondheim and am perfectly willing to admit the fault may entirely be mine. The exceptions are his oddball side projects, “”The Last of Sheila” and “Evening Primrose,” a musical adaptation of the John Collier story made for television in 1967 that is definitely worth a look. I guess you could add the film adaptation of “West Side Story” although he was but one of many cooks in that kitchen.

Nice to see Bernadette Peters is still rocking it.

Byron, like any prolific artist, Sondheim wrote some masterpieces…and some duds. His career, with ups and downs, generated a lot of musicals that lit up Broadway.

Impossible to pick one, but probably COMPANY. Jackie too, though for originality, she has always been a fan of PACIFIC OVERTURES. Of course, he only did the lyrics for GYPSY and WEST SIDE STORY, so maybe those are in a different category. Neither of us cared for SUNDAY IN THE PARK, and we never saw MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG or ASSASSINS.

    I forgot:

    INTO THE WOODS
    PASSION

The most spectacular were probably the original production of FOLLIES and SWEENEY TODD.
