SUPER BOWL LX: NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS VS. SEATTLE SEAHAWKS (NBC)

Diane and I will be rooting for Cap’n Bob’s Seattle Seahawks today. The Seahawks are favored by 4 1/2 points. As usual, I’ll be watching the Super Bowl commercials–costing between $8 million and $10 million dollars for 30 seconds!

The Seahawks are clearly the best team and survived the toughest division. There’s no doubt that they should win. Of course, that’s no guarantee they will.

Maggie, I’m disappointed that many of the Super Bowl commercials have been running on TV all week long. In the Old Days, the Super Bowl commercials were only shown on Super Bowl Sunday.

Jerry, I admire Drake Maye–who is only 22 years old. I knew Maye was a quarterback phenom last year and he exceeded expectations this year!

Well, the original World Football League would leave me (not terribly) torn between the Philadelphia Bell, the Hawaiians and the Boston Bulls, but at least their halftime show would be less sad than the Kid Rock-headliner the Trumpistas may choose to suffer through…

Beth, if you’re watching Netflix, you might want to check out AGATHA CHRISTIE’S THE SEVEN DIALS MYSTERY. I found it mildly entertaining.

Todd, plenty of empty shelves! I drove to our Wegmans this morning to pick up a Sunday NY TIMES and a few groceries…and almost slid into a snowbank! No more driving for me today!

Yikes…worst happened to me was almost getting frostbit hands while resegregating the produce groceries from those that could handle 22F in the trunk (dropping to 20 by the stopping at the fourth store–PetCo to Wegman’s to Sprouts (they carry Alice’s favorite Indian dumplings) to Acme (to collect on my apple Bing raincheck). Not quite ready to snowbird, but 20F for hauling in groceries can be persuasive–after, among other adventures, pushing some carriages out of parking spaces to their carrels at both Wegman’s and Acme…maybe the previous users had kids with them, and/or need to buy new gloves as I do…here, Wegman’s most empty shelves were in the denuded chips aisle.

Todd, when it gets this cold again–right now it’s -7 with a windchill of -20–I’ll use Wegmans Free Delivery Service.

Oh, I have…the second time, a few weeks back, they managed to leave out an item while still charging me for it. Straightened up PDQ, but nonetheless. And, in NJ at least, there is an added fee.

John’s heading out to get Popeye’s fried chicken (spicy please). We’ll have to reheat it as it gets closer to game time, but if we wait, the line will undoubtedly be out the door. We’ve been watching the Olympics all day, but will be switching over before kickoff. I think the Seahawks have a good chance of winning, but one cannot predict the future—and perhaps that’s for the best.

I’m reading, Jackie is watching the depressing Red Road (2014) with Jason Mamoa.

Popeye’s sounds pretty good right now.

Jeff, Diane and I got caught up on some programs we DVRed and now we will watch the local TV news and then watch more stuff we’ve recorded over the past month. We’ll check in on the Super Bowl time to time.

I’ll be watching more out of muscle memory than anything else. Being from St. Louis originally, all of my “teams” left me. Even though I have been in the Tampa Bay Area for 20+ years and like the team name and stadium, I have never really managed to develop any local rooting interest. So my NFL”passion” has gradually waned over the years.

Have always thought that the halftime show should feature a collegiate marching band or two.

And, as for the commercials, as George already mentioned, when you can see them a week of head time, they lose their “value.”

But we’ll watch it in-between trips to the kitchen for chili cheese dip and li’l smokies.

I don’t have a dog in this fight, but the Cap’n is a good friend and Seattle was good to me at Bouchercon, and anyway Pats won enough in the Brady-Belichick era, so Go Seahawks!

I have too much sang-froid to kick up my heels–plus too much aging cripple! But I’m of course delighted at how the game went!

Speaking of dogs, the Puppy Bowl might be the only event of the day I’ll watch, as opposed to sports, and HAVE I GOT NEWS FOR YOU from yesterday on CNN among similar fare. Bree catching BOOKISH on delay from PBS, and Patti’s right, it’s mildly diverting.

Jeff, Drake Maye looked like a 22 year old quarterback. He was sacked 7 times, threw 2 interceptions, and fumbled once. Can’t win with that performance…
