The Punisher: One Last Kill and DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN (Disney+)

As I recovered from my colonoscopy, the anesthesia (Versed) fogged my brain so I decided, since reading was impossible, to watch some series on Disney+. The Punisher: One Last Kill starts with Frank Castle (Jon Bernthal) about to end his troubled life, but a hallucination stops him. Then, Castle is confronted by crime lord Ma Gnucci, the matriarch of the Gnucci Crime Family, who seeks revenge for Castle’s murder of her husband and three sons. Gnucci reveals that she has placed a bounty on Castle’s head, attracting every common criminal in the area.

That triggers a massive attack where Castle has to fight for his life against dozens of thugs out to kill him for the Gnucci bounty. Nothing subtle, nothing fake: just out and out violence. GRADE: B

Daredevil: Born Again is a revival and continuation of Daredevil (2015–2018), an earlier series produced by the previous Marvel Television production company and originally released on Netflix.

Charlie Cox reprises his role as Matt Murdock / Daredevil. Both The Punisher and Daredevil are vigilante crime fighters with special skills sets–but no Super Powers.

Blind lawyer Matt Murdock retires his Daredevil identity, but circumstances cause him to bring Daredevil back to fight a new menace. If you’re looking for more Marvel Cinematic Universe series, here are two that might entertain you. GRADE: B

Enjoyed them both, with reservations. Daredevil (and Karen Page and Jessi.ca Jones and — to an extent — Bullseye) seemed wishy-washy at time. And then there were the inconsistencies and plot holes… I did enjoy Vincent D’Onofrio as Kingpin, but, really, who would believe that a megalomaniac head of a large government sending his own private army of thugs to terrorize the citizenry? I mean, in this day and age? Sheesh!

I understand that the constant bloodbath that was the Punisher episode was designed to set up future storylines, but the violence porn seemed a tad excessive. We’ll see what comes out in the wash over the next year or so.

Jerry, I agree with all your observations about THE PUNISHER: ONE LAST KILL and DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN. I’m not a fan of violence porn, but somehow I’m rooting for THE PUNISHER whenever he goes on a rampage. I enjoy Daredevil vs. Kingpin but this new sanitizes version of Kingpin lacks gravitas.

No Disney +, but even if we did, Hard Pass. We didn’t like the original, violence porn, as Jerry put it so well.

No Disney, though I’m glad they realized they were big enough that Drumpf couldn’t do too much to them they couldn’t withstand (better than losing subscribers). Will take a look when I eventually can. (Jimmy Kimmel and the other late night hosts of the STRIKE FORCE FIVE podcast were on Colbert’s show the other night, and Kimmel asked, why didn’t Paramount Plus subbers quit in droves in response to the heavyhanded Drumpf-suckling of killing Colbert’s series, then immediately speculative, Because there aren’t a whole hell of a lot of Paramount+ subscribers?

Todd, Diane and I are two of the rare Paramont+ subscribers. Disney+ shows STAR WARS and MARVEL series I like to follow (quality varies).

It has been a couple of years since I saw a superhero movie! I get tired of all the FX and wish they’d concentrate more on story!

Bob, both The Punisher and Daredevil lack Super Powers so both series are more plot-driven. Although, The Punisher series has an impressive body count.
