Diane decided it would be fun to watch Patrick and Katie run their half-marathon on Martha’s Vineyard so we booked a room at the boutique luxury spa, Hob Knob (https://www.hobknob.com) and made reservations on the ferry. We brought our Nissan Rogue to drive around the island. We had delicious meals at the Black Dog Inn and The Port Hunter. The weather was a little chilly for Diane, but I thought 60 degree temps were comfortable for me. We enjoyed our trip to Cape Cod a few years ago and found Martha’s Vineyard just as appealing. Great fun! Have you ever traveled to Martha’s Vineyard?
George, congratulations! Must have been a nice relaxed holiday for you and your family … 🙂
Now I’ve often read about Martha’s Vineyard but never been there though I’ve done almost 30 trips to the USA. It’s basically simple:
The USA is just too big to go everywhere and look at every interesting stuff – whether it’s cities, monuments or just nature’s wonders!
Still I feel lucky to have shown my “new” partner of almost 12 years around some of the highlights – but now we’re getting too old to travel (especially sitting in an airplane for 10 hours or more …) so I just enjoy talking with you here … 🙂
Wolf, travel becomes more difficult for all of us as we grow older. I could never attempt 10+ hour flights now. We have plenty of great places to visit within a few hours of driving time especially Toronto.
Nice one. I give them credit – even a half marathon is way too much for me.
Never been to Martha’s Vineyard, though I’d like to visit the area. I read the entire series of Philip R. Craig books set there and it does make it sound appealing.
Jeff, Martha’s Vineyard is worth a visit. I’ve read a few of the Philip R. Craig mysteries set on Martha’s Vineyard and enjoyed them. Remember, Patrick and Katie are less than half our ages!
We have spent many vacations on Cape Cod but only a day trip to Martha’s Vineyard. Both are glorious places. Although it rained almost every day on our trip there last spring.
Patti, we ran into some rain at Martha’s Vineyard, too. Island weather is unpredictable.
Sounds like a wonderful time. Next time you go, can you bring me back a shrunken head?
Dan, next time we go to Martha’s Vineyard I’ll see if I can find you a shrunken head…or some buried treasure.
Looking very dapper, George!
Never been to Martha’s Vineyard, but in my mind it’s always associated with the Kennedys and some of the pop stars who lived there in the 1970s (Art Garfunkel, James Taylor, Carly Simon, etc.). It looks beautiful there.
Hubby & I are heading out to Florida on Wednesday. Mostly staying in Key West—but on the way there we’re going to stop in Tampa for a Rays game and Miami for a Marlins game (and some great Cuban food). Vacation here we come!
Great. If you don’t have any place in mind, let me recommend Havana Harry’s in Coral Gables (actually, there are two locations, but this is the one we’ve been to, twice). Yum.
Deb, I never realized Chappaquiddick was part of Martha’s Vineyard. Have fun in Florida! Perfect time to watch baseball.
Florida! 🙂
I’ll never forget the first time I drove out from Miami Beach to Key West – after having just read the story of the last train that got caught by that dreadful hurricane. We did many stops on those bridges looking out at the remnants of the old railway bridges.
And Key West was also something special – in the late 80s, nowadays I’m not so sure …
PS and a bit OT:
In the last Century there often were fabulous offers for flights and hotels in Florida (like flight and a week in a beach hotel for 300$!) – of course in November, out of season. But for us that was magnificent, fleeing from the wet coldness of Europe. So we often went there – fond memories!
Considering it’s over 3,100 miles away, no. Glad you had such a good time.
Rick, I actually saw vehicles on Martha’s Vineyard with California plates! That’s a long way from home.
Wow! The USA is really big!
I just had google calculate the distance between the extreme points in Europe that I’ve traveled to with my little camper van:
Gibraltar in the South of Spain (but it still belongs to the British Empire) – Adana (South East Turkey) is only 3050 miles! 🙂
What a good-looking family and a fun outing! I would have been looking for a jacket right along with Diane.
And congratulations on finding an independent bookstore. During my travels in NYC, the only bookstore I saw this time was Barnes & Noble ( but I wasn’t looking very hard).
I’ve never been to Martha’s Vineyard. It looks beautiful but I don’t think it’s my kinda place.
Beth, the cool staircase was the best part of the Edgartown Bookstore. Martha’s Vineyard has 15,000 residents. From Memorial Day to Labor Day the population increases to 50,000. And the traffic is bumper-to-bumper. If you decide to visit Martha’s Vineyard, I advise you to go “off-season.”
