This version of Cat People is a remake of the 1942 Jacques Tourneur noir classic. Cat People stars Nastassia Kinski as Irena and Malcolm McDowell as her brother. Written and directed by Paul Schrader, this story of first love and its tragic consequences captures some of the darkness of the original, but this version amps up the sex and violence. If you’re looking for a shape-shifting beauty in a noirish plot, Cat People delivers.
I wish they would also release the Val Lewton series in High Definition but I do remember quite liking this one, not least for it great score by Giorgio Moroder (the title song turning up in the Tarantino Inglorious Basterds was one hell of a surprise)
I prefer the original but Nasti was good casting and I did enjoy this one too.
I looked her up and was surprised to see she had a three year relationship (and a child) with Quincy Jones.
Sergio, you’re right about the Giogio Moroder music. It really gives this film a distinct flavor.
Jeff, like you I prefer the original, too. Nasti was full of surprises.
Nasti was the best thing about this one.
Bill, I agree. Nasti makes CAT PEOPLE worth watching. She looks great in Blu-ray, too!
I’ll say. 🙂
She was big for a while. I liked her in TESS more than this one. That guy on the cover sure doesn’t look like Malcolm McDowell to me.
Patti, I liked Nastassia Kinski in TESS, too. You’re right about that guy on the cover of the Blu-ray box. No way he looks like Malcolm McDowell!
My favorite film of all time… on Blu-Ray?
That sounds so awesome, I do own the DVD and would definitely look forward to upgrading it since this is a huge surprise. I’ll bet it will look gorgeous like never before. 🙂
Natassja Kinski gives it her all, also Schrader’s best since MISHIMA. Seen it over 29 times now already, a lot to describe about this film.
I am with you folks on this release.
Christopher, you’re right: it’s awesome!
