Imagine my surprise when I found this set of DVDs in our local Salvation Army store. Here was the entire ACORN/BBC set of all Hercule Poirot’s cases. I watched them all on our local PBS station over the years and loved them. I even bought a couple of smaller sets of Poirot episodes. But now I have them all in one lovely box set. And the cost…$3.99. AMAZON is selling this set for $299! Do you have a favorite Poirot episode? GRADE: A+
George, you got the deal of all time with that set! We have it—and paid full price for it a couple of years ago (we also got the complete Joan Hickson Miss Marple and complete Jeremy Brett Sherlock Holmes at the same time). The Poirot set is wonderful—David Suchet is perfect as Poirot and, although the adaptations take some liberties with the stories in order to make them regular characters, the characters of Hastings, Japp, and Miss Lemon round out a wonderful ensemble. My favorites include “After the Funeral,” “Taken at the Flood,” “Evil under the Sun,” and “Death on the Nile.” I will say that I don’t find the adaptation of “Murder on the Orient Express” to be one of the best—there seems to be a lot of emphasis on Poirot’s Catholicism, which I do not recall ever being raised in the book. But all-in-all a stellar collection that I’m sure will give you many hours of viewing pleasure. Enjoy!
Deb, I’m hoping that Joan Hickson/Miss Marple complete set shows up! And the Jeremy Brett/Sherlock Holmes complete set, too! People seem to be dumping their DVDs and going with streaming services like Netflix, HULU, AMAZON Prime TV, Disney+, etc. I’m a big fan of EVIL UNDER THE SUN, too!
They’re fools if they do.
Poirot mentions being a “good Catholic” in one of the early short stories. I don’t know if it ever comes up again.
Wow, what a bargain! Deb’s right. She’s also right about the latest ORIENT EXPRESS, which was not good.
Jeff, you and Deb are right about this version of MURDER ON THE ORIENT EXPRESS. Something is a bit off.
I will pick the ABC MURDERS.
Patti, Diane’s Book Club just read THE ABC MURDERS and in preparation for that meeting, Diane and I listened to the audio book and watched the David Suchet version. Excellent!
I bought the blu ray set a few years back from Amazon for about $100, Actually the last 3 episodes weren’t shown in PBS but could only be seen on Acorn.
Ray, I did not realize that. Good to know! I’ll have to watch this last three episodes soon.
Fantastic bargain. Here, we’re supposed to stay home except for essential travel, but I guess there you can do whatever you want.
Rick, all the stores around here require masks, enforce social distancing, and have disinfectant available when you enter the store. I’m willing to risk a weekly visit to the thrift stores.
George – I recently found a similar deal that had all but the final season on a large number of DVDs. I probably spent $30 for them and the final set. For the last month or so I have been watching them in the order they were released. Just finished Dumb Witness the other night and will probably watch an episode or two tonight. Also got complete Sherlock Holmes, some Marlowe, Tommy and Tuppence, and others that same day. I had two big grocery totes full of Mystery! DVDs. It was a great day!!
Scott, congratulations! What a great score!
Such a deal!
Bob, people are “decluttering” during the Coronavirus Pandemic so plenty of great “stuff” is showing up at thrift stores at bargain prices!
