As a diabetic, I’m always on the lookout for low-carb food that tastes good. Recently, I tried one of Nature Valley’s new Nut Crisp Bars. I chose the Almond Dark Chocolate Nut Crisp Bars (there are three other choices: Almond Crunch Roasted Nut Crunch Bars, Peanut Crunch Roasted Nut Crunch Bars, and Salted Caramel Peanut Nut Crisp Bars). The Almond Dark Chocolate Nut Crisp Bars are only 130 calories. But the payoff is in the carbohydrates: only 11 grams. Once you subtract the 2 grams of fiber, the net carbs for one of these tasty bars is only 9 grams of carbohydrate. If you’re looking for a good tasting, low-carb snack I’d recommend Nature Valley Nut Crisp Bars. What is your favorite snack?
George, we have sampled Nature Valley bars although I don’t remember what kind. I think they’re an acquired taste.
Prashant, I didn’t know Nature Valley products had such wide distribution. You’re right: the taste of their bars is an acquired taste.
When it comes to snacks, my kids like the Nature Valley Granola Thins (Dark Chocolate). I gravitate toward saltier options–I love veggie chips and Stacey’s Pita Chips with hummus. My husband could eat Utz’s Potato Stix all day long!
Deb, I have a weakness for kettle potato chips in all forms and by any manufacturer.
I cannot believe this. I wrote a whole detailed list of our high fiber snacks and got told “the website cannot display” the reply.
Jeff, I’ve noticed WORDPRESS does not like long responses. You might want to break a long response into two parts.
And yet that works perfectly.
Popcorn by far. I could eat it everyday. (And do mostly) I try to pop it in the air popper and spray on a little olive oil in a can for taste. Phil is less a fan and would eat cheese all the time.
Patti, I eat a bag of microwave popcorn a couple times a week usually while watching TV.
That’s still a lot of carbs, and you don’t mention sugars. I’ve found most “nature bar” kinds of snacks are not a good choice, but then it’s hard to find ANY snack that’s a good choice. I just keep a large bottle of cold water on hand and try not to think of a snack. Doesn’t always work, but if we don’t have anything in the house but dinner makings and raw veggies, I can better ignore the cravings.
Rick, any snack under 10 grams of carbohydrate is a winner in my book. You’re right about most “nature bars” having a lot of carbs. But these Nut Crisp bars don’t.
My favorite snack is whatever’s in the house, and usually it’s something I should avoid.
Bob, my favorite snack is Peanut M&Ms. I have no will power when they’re around!
OK, one (or two) more try (tries). Our gastroenterologist told us to eat a lot of fiber – as in 30-35 grams per day. So our snacks are all the high fiber variety.
First, Fiber One bars or cookies, all of which have FIVE grams of fiber. The bars are 90 calories, the cookies are 110-120. Bars are lemon, chocolate chip, chocolate fudge, cinnamon, chocolate mint and chocolate peppermint (last two for Jackie only). 18 carbs (minus 5 for fiber), 3 grams of fat, 0 cholesterol, 85 mg. sodium.
If you warm the cinnamon 10 seconds in the microwave it tastes like a fresh coffee cake, for those (like me) who like that.
After an apple (4 fibers) and a Weight Watchers ice cream (4-5 fibers) we have a salty snack with television (also 4-5 fibers). We have either pretzels, chips or snapeas.
Pretzels: B & B 100% Whole Wheat – Long Sticks With Sea Salt. Imported from Israel. 41 sticks are 110 calories, 0 fat & cholesterol, 4 fibers.
Chips are Glennys Whole Wheat Popped Crispy Chips with Sea Salt. One ounce (41 sticks) is 100 calories, 4 fibers, 1.5 grams of fat. I find them a little greasy, Jackie likes them. She orders them online by the boxload.
Snapea Crisps we get in big bags at Costco. They are baked, lightly salted and addictive. I ounce (22 peas) is 110 calories, only 50 mg. of sodium, 4 fibers, 4.5 grams of fat, zero cholesterol.
Jeff, you’re right about fiber. I’m convinced it’s important to Good Health. And I’m with you on microwaving those cinnamon bars. They do taste just like coffee cake!
I don’t see how you’re getting 35 G of fiber in what you say unless you are eating half a dozen of the bars and cookies plus the apple plus the ice cream… I can’t make sense of it.
OK, Rick. Here you go.
