Loosely based on the FBI ABSCAM sting operation from the 1970s, American Hustle captures the nuttiness of those times. I was impressed by Christian Bale as a cunning con-man. Amy Adams plays a character 180 degrees opposite of her usual “good girl” roles. And Jennifer Laurence continues to be a chameleon as she becomes an all too believable high-maintenance wife in this movie. Bradley Cooper veers close to going over the top as an ambitious FBI agent. If you’re a fan of twisty plots and surprise endings, American Hustle is the movie for you. The bizarre hair-styles are worth the ticket alone! GRADE: B+
Looks like whoever designed the ladies’ dresses enjoyed his work!
Dan, the audience for AMERICAN HUSTLE got an eyeful of Amy and Jennifer.
This is definitely on our list. And I think Amy Adams is hot!
Jeff, Amy Adams is a redhead in AMERICAN HUSTLE. Smokin’ hot!
Bizarre? Whaddya mean, “bizarre”? I miss the old days!
Bill, I was referring to the hairstyles and the music (plenty of Seventies music on the soundtrack!). I’m fond of the Seventies, too.
I enjoyed it. B+ seems about right. I thought the structure, editing and look of the film owed a lot to Martin Scorcese-esp Goodfellas and Casino.
Steve, I totally agree. AMERICAN HUSTLE has a very retro feel to it.
I wonder what the box office on this will be? The TV trailer spots have already been pushed aside by other films.
I’m looking forward to this one.
Rick, I think AMERICAN HUSTLE will do well at the box office. Our theater (on Christmas Day) was packed.
Beth, you will really enjoy AMERICAN HUSTLE. I liked the retro feel of the film.
