Snakes. Lots and lots of snakes. That’s what you’re going to encounter when reading S. J. Bolton’s second novel, Awakening. Clara Benning, a veterinary surgeon, is called in when a spooky plague of serpents invades her small English village. Like Sacrifice, Bolton’s first novel, Awakening generates plenty of suspense as the plot unfolds. The roots of the mystery stretch into the past and Clara’s investigations invite further violence. The pages flew by when I read this gripping novel. GRADE: B+
Looks like she’s the real deal with two books this good.
Both SACRIFICE and AWAKENING kept me turning the pages, Patti. You’re right: S. J. Bolton is the Real Deal. I’m reading her BLOOD HARVEST now.
I have SACRIFICE on the way to join the pile of books waiting to be read.
After you read SACRIFICE, Jeff, you’re going to want to read Bolton’s AWAKENING. She’s that good.
Lots of snakes, eh? Wife would have nightmares after reading this one. Only thing worse would be spiders, or spiders AND snakes.
Well, these are BIG snakes, Rick. And they show up when you least expect them. No one is going to be relaxed reading AWAKENING!
Keep her away from Fritz Leiber’s “Change War” stories, clearly, Rick…while this one might not be Bill Crider’s favorite. Where’s the Bolton crocodilian novel?
According to Bolton’s blog, Todd, she’s turning in her fourth novel to her editor in September and is almost done with the First Draft of her fifth.
