TMC has issued a dozen of these collections: mysteries, romantic comedies, SF, etc. I’m featuring TCM: BATTLEFRONT EUROPE because I don’t believe you can beat the value of this package. It includes Kelly’s Heroes (a personal favorite), Where Eagles Dare, The Dirty Dozen, and Battleground. Four classics for $16.84 at Sam’s Club, or a couple bucks more at AMAZON. These movies bring back a lot of memories, and in these times of fluff and reality TV, projects like these will go the way of the dinosaurs. Buy them while they’re still available!
Wasn’t Don Rickles in Kelly’s Heroes, George, and if it’s your favorite shouldn’t it be Kelley’s Heroes?
😉
Everyone spells my name wrong, Jeff. And, yes, Don Rickles–in a sensitive, soul-searing role–steals the movie.
KELLY’S HEROES is a pretty good war flick. It’s also an interesting period piece. I ‘m always amused that the film makers pretty much took a 60’s hippie (Donald Sutherland) and dropped him into the middle of a WWII action movie.
One assumes the average GI in 1944 was not totally baked.
I’m a huge Donald Sutherland fan, Drongo. And, I’m amazed at his performances in those war movies. He was the Johnny Depp of his day.
This looks good. Too bad Sam’s Club is not in The West. Maybe I can find it at Costco. Anyway, these all are pretty darn good, and worth a watch.
This post fits in really well with my new series George: Saturday Soundtrack. Check out my blog. Interested in joining up?
AMAZON has the TCM collections at reasonable prices, too, Rick. Getting four movies for the price of one is a bargain in my book.
I said “joining up” but it’s just me, really.
I’ll certainly be tuning in each Saturday to see what you recommend, Rick. I don’t own all that many soundtracks…but I have a feeling after a few of your SATURDAY SOUNDTRACK postings I’ll be buying more.
For my money BATTLEGROUND is the best of the lot and Kelly’s Heroes the least. That Hippie in WWII was simply preposterous and as I recall it wasn’t a war movie, it was a bank heist caper.
You know I love caper novels and movies, Bob. I bet if they called it NAPIER’S HEROES you might have a soft spot for the film like I do.
I doubt it. I wouldn’t want my name attached to so inane an idea. I do enough of that on my own. Serioudly, I like the movie for what it is, but I don’t consider it a true WWII film any more than I consider The Three Stooges Meet Hercules a true sword and sandals flick.
Did you know that there are plans in Hollywood to “remake” some of The Three Stooges’ movies, Bob? I can’t wait to see the casting for that debacle!
