In the first episode of Bosch: Legacy, the sequel spin-off to Amazon Prime Video’s long-running detective procedural, an earthquake strikes Los Angeles and shakes the foundation of Harry Bosch’s beautiful home in the Hollywood Hills with cracks everywhere.
Bosch’s house, a glass-encased two-bedroom on stilts, was also featured in the Michael Mann classic Heat—it’s where Amy Brenneman’s graphic designer (and Robert De Niro love interest) Eady lives—and it’s an essential part of the Bosch experience. It’s the perfect metaphorical space for a detective to brood while playing jazz records and nursing a Fat Tire beer. Now, because of the structural damage, Bosch, never exactly a work/life balance adherent, has to sleep in his office.
With Bosch (Titus Welliver) leaving the police force and becoming a private detective, the focus becomes equally focused on the Past…and the Future. Having never known his own father, Bosch gets personally wrapped up in solving the case of a wealthy, dying client (William Devane) who seeks to discover what happened to the woman he got pregnant 70 years ago.
Played by Madison Lintz, Bosch’s daughter Maddie struggles in her new career in the police force. Honey “Money” Chandler (Mimi Rogers), a civil rights lawyer who faced off with Bosch in the courtroom over seven seasons, eventually finds she needs Bosch’s help after almost being murdered.
If you’re a Bosch fan, you’ll enjoy Bosch: Legacy. A second season has already been approved. GRADE: B
I am enjoying Bosch Legacy. Not quite as much as Bosch. I could do without so much of the daughter who I don’t find very interesting. Still, it’s much better that Reacher which I found poorly written.
Steve, I’m with you on Bosch’s daughter.
Struggling to get interested and I am not sure why. It needed a new injection of something. I miss the characters left behind, I think. And I never found either his daughter or Honey very interesting.
Patti, I think BOSCH: LEGACY is watered down. Bosch’s daughter and Honey don’t add much to the mix.
Considering how much I’ve liked the BOSCH series in the past, it’s astonishing how little enthusiasm I have for watching this, and I haven’t yet started it. There was way too much Maddie in the last couple of seasons on Amazon and, from what I’ve read about it there’s even more of her in LEGACY. And since Bosch is no longer a cop, where does that leave characters like J. Edgar and my own favorites, Crate and Barrel? Plus, commercials! Love Bosch’s house, though, and have always wondered how the hell he could afford it. That said, I’m sure I’ll give in and watch it.
Michael, just set the bar low for BOSCH: LEGACY. We’ll have to see how Bosch transitions from a cop to a private investigator.
Bosch bought the house when the book Black Echo became a movie. You can spot the movie poster for it on one of Bosch’s walls.
Crate and Barrel do show up.
Steve, I noticed that BLACK ECHO movie poster on the wall, too!
There are commercials? In an extra cost movie channel?? Glad I don’t get that.
Rick, Freevee is free. But, you have to put up with commercials.
What is “Freevee”?
Rick, formerly IMDb TV, Amazon Freevee is an ad-supported, free video streaming service that offers 100s of TV series and movies to watch on demand with no subscription needed. It also sports over 60 “Fast Channels” that are dedicated to popular series and stream episodes live.
As well as archive and classic shows, such as The West Wing and Babylon 5, it will get Freevee Originals – new programming especially commissioned for Freevee. This will include Bosch spinoff, Bosch: Legacy and Plan B’s High School.
Haven’t started this; in fact, don’t think we’ve finished the original BOSCH yet. I imagine too many of the original cast were due raises, and this was an easy way to save money.
Michael, Bosch bought that great house with movie money, having sold his story of an earlier case to a film company.
Jeff, Bosch better have great Earthquake Insurance to cover all the damage done to his glass house.
Earthquake insurance in CA is always a separate policy, and it’s VERY, VERY expensive.
Thanks, Jeff. That fact about the house was buried deep in my memory banks, which aren’t what they used to be.
We haven’t watched it yet, but will. The daughter is fine, in small doses, but looks like they built up her role here.
Jeff, BOSCH: LEGACY subtracted some characters from the original series and puffed up the roles of the daughter and the lawyer.
I agree with most of the comments in particular related to his daughter. I believe Bosch said that he had cancelled or not kept up the payments on his earthquake insuarnce. I think I saw somewhere that J. Edgar is in it, but he didn’t make an appearance in the first four episodes.
Next on my watch list is the new Joe Pickett series based on the C. J. Box novels.
Kent, I’m going to give the Joe Pickett series a try, too.
Hope you weren’t shopping at the grocery store today, George!
Rick, I was home because it’s raining here. But I have shopped in that grocery store in the past.
my friend that I watch streaming with doesn’t like titus welliver, so we will probably never watch it, and I doubt I’ll get amazon. may try freevee. My problem with streaming is I was unable to fast forward and may have had an issue with close captioning.
Maggie, I had no problem watching Freevee on my computer. No Fast Forward–they want you to watch the commercials–but closed captioning is available.
We haven’t started watching BOSCH: LEGACY yet but we will be watching. I will have to wait and see what I think of the daughter’s role in this version.
Tracy, I found the daughter’s subplot…sub-prime.
