Our two BORDERS stores close their doors today for the last time. I made one last trip to BORDERS and bought a half dozen of James Reasoner’s LONGARMs. I bought another handful of Elmer Kelton’s westerns. The new David Hagberg novel was still there so I scooped that up. And, although I have a copy of Samuel Johnson’s Major Works, why not have a spare? I’m sad that BORDERS is closing down. I suspect publishers will be sad, too. BORDERS, for all its faults, sold millions of books. Now, there’s a vast vacuum. Bye, bye BORDERS. I’ll miss you.
It’s always sad when a bookstore closes, and when it’s a major chain the ripples really go far out there. You certainly did your part to keep them in business!
A spare Sam Johnson? You’re giving Andy J. a run for his money!
The prices were 70% to 85% off, Jeff. At 85% off, a spare Samuel Johnson was irresistable.
Since Borders was so much Michigan’s store, I will miss it terribly. Have never been able to warm up to B & N, which always has the coldest feeling stores out here. Plus a goodly number of them are gone. And I know they talk about the rise of Indies but the nearest one is a long way from us and small. Not a place to spend time.
With 400 BORDERS stores closing, Patti, a huge void appears for people who love and buy books. I visited BORDERS about once a week for years. They’d email me a 30% off or 40% coupon and I just had to buy something in their stores: books, CDs, or DVDs. I spent thousands of dollars at BORDERS over the years.
I was going to go by today, but changed my mind. Not much left and too sad to go in, plus it’s crammed with scavengers. It was nice to be able to go browse at a hands-on bookstore…
Our BORDERS are offering 10 books for $10 deals today, Rick. But, as you say, all the books have been picked over. I’d rather not deal with the scavengers, either.
